<strong>Smith</strong> is gratified to know that Penn has been so pleased by the<br />

Oration he made at Commencement acknowledging the support to<br />

the schools’ benefactors and in particular the Penn family. Penn<br />

has provided a lot to <strong>Smith</strong> with a reasonable ground rent so that<br />

<strong>Smith</strong> may move his stable, back buildings, and kitchen to this<br />

property. <strong>Smith</strong> clarifies an exchange on the matter of Mr.<br />

Graham’s interest in the Clerk of Peace for Chester and assures<br />

Penn that he (<strong>Smith</strong>) was making no recommendation on Graham’s<br />

behalf.<br />

1765; in that election the Franklin party returned to full control of<br />

the Assembly; assures <strong>Smith</strong> that the method of issuing Tavern<br />

Licenses will not be altered; urges <strong>Smith</strong> to see the repeal of the<br />

Stamp Act as a great favor done the American colonist by the<br />

British government; congratulates <strong>Smith</strong> on the award of charters<br />

to the German churches in Philadelphia, noting particularly the<br />

adherence of Sauer and the Germantown residents to the Penn<br />

family proprietor; more discussion of <strong>Smith</strong>’s continued requests<br />

for financial support through gifts of land and government<br />

sinecure; approval of <strong>Smith</strong>’s plan to settle frontier townships
