As modern India’s National Channel, Doordarshan holds a unique collection of archival material on India’s
exquisite and classic performing arts that have survived, without ‘formal documentation’, as understood by the
transcribing tradition of western societies.
Today, Doordarshan Channels – DD-National, DD-Bharati, DD-News, DD-Sports, DD-India, DD-Urdu and
regional channels – substantially cover and present the millennia-old heritage of India.
Many genres of music, dance and theatre in India, now termed ‘classical’, have flourished along with folk forms
in contemporary milieu, in a fascinating blend of continuity and evolution, for over 2,500 years.
Doordarshan celebrated the centenary of recorded music in India (1902-2002) with its first set of seven VCDs
and ACDs in January 2003.
Now, there are 156 titles available and many more are in the offing – the cherished performance-highs of a great
nation with a hoary heritage.
Doordarshan Archives has taken up the task of digitization of all its content, collected and preserved in its libraries
across the country. It is a fabulous visual history of the last five decades, as the Public Service Broadcaster has left
almost no aspect of life in the country untouched.
This Media Asset, a great treasure, is being converted into virtual archives through a high-end Media Asset
Management (MAM) solution which will preserve this treasure for posterity and also ensure its easy retrieval.
Repurposing the content for dissemination on various digital platforms like webcasting, interactive video on
demand, podcasting, DVD customisation etc. offers a new dimension to mainstream media. These initiatives will
be fully supported by Media Asset Management.
The aim is to make these cultural heirlooms user-friendly and accessible to votaries of culture.
