by Kim Henderson
although Mariel Hemingway’s famous surname conjures up associations with her grandfather,
the illustrious Ernest Hemingway, in the world of natural health, she stands strong
and tall as a trailblazer in her own right. An Oscar-nominated actress for her role in Manhattan,
Hemingway has become, in more recent years, one of the leading voices for holistic
health and balanced living. Perhaps out of a desperate need to survive, this actress, author and
yogi has transcended the self-destructive Hemingway legacy and allowed it to propel her to
vibrant health on all levels—spiritual, emotional and physical. She has, in fact, created a new
legacy—one of self-reflection, health, balance and peace. And lucky for us, she recently shared
some of her best health secrets with DPHL.
DPHL first met up with the ever-beautiful
Mariel at her home in sunny Southern
California. She came up from the driveway
with an upbeat bounce in her step;
“Hi” she said brightly. Having watched her
in movies, and having just finished her
read-worthy book Living Healthy from the
Inside Out, it was a real thrill to meet her in person.
She carries a sense of self-possession, peace and
health that is evident upon meeting her.
Mariel’s home is refreshingly modest, simple,
yet overflowing with natural beauty and elegance,
nestled between hiking trails, hills and wilderness.
The city is just a short drive away. It is her sanctuary
or “sacred space” as she calls it. Creating a beautiful,
harmonious home space is, she believes, an
essential component of happy and balanced living.
Hemingway’s interest in natural health has been
a lifelong pursuit. “I’ve always been interested in
health. It’s who I am.” she says. And indeed, her
passion for health started at an early age.
“When I was a child, my mother was very sick,
and so, health became very important to me. I
had some intuitive sense that diet and disease
were related,” she recalls. “I became macrobiotic
and vegan when I was 16 and have continued
to be holistically minded about food and
health ever since.”
Hemingway did not have it easy as a child. She
shares openly in her memoir Finding My Balance
(and in her blogs at www.marielhemingway.com
and www.marielskitchen.com) about
the challenges of her early home
life—a mother with cancer, her
parents’ loveless marriage, and two older sisters
who struggled with mental health challenges and
addiction—not to mention the burden that goes
with carrying the Hemingway name. As a young
actress in Hollywood, she abused her body with
extreme diets and compulsive exercise, never sitting
still for too long, always staying a step ahead
of her anxiety and uncomfortable feelings inside. It
wasn’t until she found yoga in her 20s that her relationship
with herself, her body, food and others
began to change ever so slowly. Today, taking loving
care of herself is a top priority, and she does
this by tending to four areas, as outlined in her
Whole Body
Vibration Therapy
Whole body vibration therapy may sounds mysterious or “woo
woo,” but in fact, it has been around for nearly 50 years. The
idea came from observing human body movement under the
influence of Earth’s gravitational force. The movement of our
internal organs is constantly influenced by gravity, which
works in a vertical direction. When we run, vertical vibrations
cause the body organs and muscles to contract and
relax repeatedly. This type of vertical movement stimulates
the growth plates, improves circulation, energizes the lymphatic
system and enhances muscle strength (as a result of
the contract/relax response). In the 1960s, the Russians
were among the first to explore how vibration could be useful
to athletes and to their space program (vibration training was
shown to slow muscle atrophy in astronauts). Once the Iron
Curtain lifted, the West finally began profiting from the
research that had been performed on vibration. In 1996, the
first whole body vibration device was patented.
Today, a whole body vibration device creates a vertical
vibration from a base that the user stands on. The
TurboSonic uses quiet sound (sonic) vibration which
emanates up through the body, stimulating the muscle
fibers (myocytes) with three times the strength of gravity.
The myocytes contract and relax with more intense
