GALESBURG — The Carl
Sandburg College men’s basketball
team only returns four
players from a year ago — but
all four are starters.
Still, second-year head
coach must characterize his
squad as a young team.
Saginaw, Mich., products
Kuddles Hopkins and Robert
Clark return to lead CSC.
Hopkins, a 6-2 guard, was
picked a NJCAA Division II
All-American prior to the season.
He averaged 16 points,
5.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists
last year.
But freshman who’ve
already impressed include
Williamsfield’s Patrick Lewis,
The Register-Mail’s Player of
the Year last season. “He’s
gotten better at taking the ball
to the basket. He’s improved a
lot,” said Twaddle.
CSC, 10-19 last season, is
off to a 4-1 start through
Tuesday.
“We’ve played pretty well,”
said Twaddle. “I’ve been
happy with our offense. We’ve
put a lot of points on the
board the first few games.
“We’ve got the shore up the
defense. We know we’re going
to give up points if we’re
going to run up and down
— we understand that — but
a lot of teams are shooting too
high of a percentage against
us.”
The Chargers are a quick,
athletic team but they might
struggle in a half-court game.
A one-time assistant under
previous coach Mike Bailey,
Twaddle has high expectations
for this season.
“I don’t think there’s any
reason we can’t win a region
championship,” he said.
“That’s our goal — a region
championship and conference
championship.”
GALESBURG — After
its fourth straight trip to
the NJCAA Division II
national tournament and
another Arrowhead Conference
championship, the Carl
Sandburg College women’s
basketball team only became
a bigger target in the eyes of
their opponents.
Coach Mike Bailey, whose
team is off to a 2-0 start
D27
hopes his team is up to the
ever-growing challenge and
he hasn’t been pleased with
his team’s early play despite
the wins.
“We haven’t been able to
mesh the kids together yet,”
said Bailey, whose team
entered the season No. 11ranked
in NJCAA Division
II.
“We’ve got nice athletes,
that’s why we’re frustrated,”
he added. “We just can’t get
them on the same page. They
don’t play well together.
CSC finished 27-9 last season
and sixth at nationals
