LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Drinking cheap Seagrams in my new apartment. 2 LATENCY SEPTEMBER 2012 Issue 12. It’s been exactly one year since I started this magazine alone from my bedroom in my mom’s house in Floral Park - working two days a week teaching guitar lessons from the basement of a local music store. Fast forward 12 months later and I’m writing this to you from my apartment in Greenpoint, after coming back home from work, and armed with a dedicated staff of seven talented individuals (welcome aboard, David Antunes!). Things done changed; I’m in a great band now, I don’t lay awake at night and think about my ex anymore, I discovered I can do more than three pull-ups, and I now have this ridiculous umlaut in my name (see below). Liiiiiife goes byyyyy so faaaaast, right? About this issue: Staten Island: I’ve played two shows there and attended a pool party there once - that’s about it. For most people I know, their visits there are sparse as well. Aside from Wu-Tang and the ferry, people don’t know (or, seem to care to know) too much about this place. It’s a part of New York that is the subject of many jokes. Latency thought it would be a good idea to take an entire issue and delve a little deeper into a part of NYC that gets a lot of flack, sometimes for no good reason. First, we have famed New York historian Adam Friedman give us a brief history lesson on the island of Staten. Next, we explore a bit of the local musical talent. Sweet Lucy is a personal favorite band; energetic reggae with good lyrics. Let’s just say Brad Nowell is somewhere in heaven right now with a boner. This interview also came out great. The Avon Junkies are one of the more well-known bands out of the Staten Area. Here’s a link to their latest video. William Helms (from the music blog The Joy of Violent Movement) wrote a great piece on them. Imagine Link 80 meets Pennywise meets old-school River City Rebels (aka before they went glam). Finally, the lovely Julieanna Gray (who happens to be a life-long Staten Island resident) gives us a few good lessons in surviving the Staten Island ferry. Latency Magazine is taking a two-month break, to refresh and refocus our efforts. I’m going to take this time to play some more music, see some more shows, and generally explore my city even further. There are talks about an anniversary party and t-shirts in the works, so stay tuned. In the meantime, here’s my official Äutumn Playlist for you to enjoy.
