About our guest – Fr Austin McGirr
Fr Austin McGirr was appointed to Portstewart as Parish Priest in April 2006. He was “surprised and
delighted – like a lottery winner” and has quickly settled into the community. Fr Austin was ordained for
Down & Connor in 1971 and Portstewart is the eighth parish in which he has been asked to serve.
Originally from east Belfast, Fr Austin attended St Malachy’s College before training for the priesthood
at Carlow College seminary.
Since coming to Portstewart, Fr Austin has become a Dominican – by joining our Board of Governors.
He describes two particular passions – a hunger for renewal in the Church and a fondness for music from
the best era of all –the 1960s.
