actuacion." To help complement this lack of concrete infor­<br />

mation, the history of Mexico has been employed in some<br />

detail to set the background and assist in explaining the<br />

formation and thought of Emilio, as he grew from a small<br />

town rancher's son in an isolated state of Mexico to become<br />

one of its best realistic novelists and later a highly re­<br />

garded political theorist. The biographical chapters have<br />

been sprinkled liberally with quotes precisely to document<br />

the previous lack of knowledge of Rabasa's life. Some unex-<br />

plainable gaps still exist, hampering the attempt to<br />

understand and interpret certain activities and actions.<br />

Nevertheless, it is hoped that this study will serve to tie<br />

together all the available details to help any who are<br />

desirous of continuing further investigation of his life.<br />

Rabasa began his writing career in the literary<br />

field, and achieved fame as the man who introduced realism<br />

into the Mexican novel. He soon abandoned literature for<br />

political and juridical writings and because of the outstand­<br />

ing contributions made to these disciplines , his early<br />
