insecurity on child health, academic<br />

achievement, psychological health, <strong>and</strong><br />

behavior demonstrates that household<br />

food security is an issue that extends<br />

beyond the boundaries <strong>of</strong> nutrition <strong>and</strong><br />

into the realms <strong>of</strong> education, public<br />

health, <strong>and</strong> medicine. Given the<br />

preponderance <strong>of</strong> evidence that hunger<br />

<strong>and</strong> food insecurity are serious risk<br />

factors in child development, ef<strong>for</strong>ts are<br />

needed to increase the food security <strong>of</strong><br />

American families <strong>and</strong> their children,<br />

whether by exp<strong>and</strong>ing nutrition<br />

assistance programs or through<br />

programs <strong>and</strong> policies that enable<br />

parents to provide adequately <strong>for</strong> the<br />

basic needs <strong>of</strong> their families.<br />
