Foreword The most apparent change in this year’s edition of Friend at Court is the larger size of the pages. This made it possible to reduce the thickness of the book and slightly increase the type size for the index. The second major change is inclusion of the USTA Emergency Care Guidelines. Tournament administrators and officials should benefit from easy access to this excellent resource. Substantive changes were minimal this year, but several sections of the book were rewritten including: • USTA Regulation VII.B. Adult, Senior, and Family National Tournament Regulations; • USTA Regulation VII.C. Wheelchair National Tournament Regulations; • USTA Regulation XIV.E. Adult, Senior, and Family National Rankings; and • USTA Regulation XIV.F. Wheelchair National Rankings. Where substantive changes or changes that the editors want to call to your attention have been made since the last publication of Friend at Court, there is a vertical line in the margin. For amendments that become effective after press time, please refer to the USTA website, USTA.com. Friend at Court (FAC) is not a training manual. The gray highlighted areas are a blend of commonly accepted answers to questions about the rules, officiating techniques, and officiating procedures derived from several sources, including the ATP, ITA, ITF, and WTA Tour. If you wish to learn more about accepted procedures, you should attend a USTA-approved training school. iii
