9th European Congress of Trauma and Emergency Surgery First ...

Dear Colleagues,
WELCOME
We, the trauma and emergency surgeons of Hungary, as well as the board of ESTES, bid
welcome to all participants of the First ESTES Congress 2008 in Budapest!
Hungarian trauma surgery derived from general surgery well before WW II and showed a
similar pattern of development as Austrian trauma surgery. A central institute of trauma
was founded in 1956 and nowadays, we have four university chairs at our four medical
universities. During the early years, specialization was based on general surgery but in
1984, an independent trauma specialization was introduced. A common trauma and
orthopaedic surgery specialization has been effective since 2006. However, the independent
networks of trauma and orthopaedic care are maintained. The network of trauma
care consists of university departments, regional centers, and many hospital departments, providing a system
of 52 units.
We hope that the 1st ESTES Congress will provide a lot of useful information for all of us.

The European Association for Trauma and Emergency Surgery (EATES) and the European
Trauma Society (ETS) have bestowed on me a great honor by agreeing to choose me as
the Co-president of the “9th European Congress of Trauma and Emergency Surgery
FIRST ESTES CONGRESS” to be held in Budapest, May 24-27, 2008.
Due to the enormous efforts undertaken by the members of the EATES board under the
direction of the past president Ari Leppaniemi (Helsinki, Finland) to rebuild and strengthen
the organisational structure as well as the diplomacy, characteristic of the new
president of EATES, Sten Lennquist (Linköping, Sweden), and the General Secretary,
Korhan Taviloglu (Istanbul, Turkey), the consensus of the members of both executive
boards that met in May 2007 in Graz, Austria, we now all proudly belong to one new society, the European
Society for Trauma and Emergency Surgery, or ESTES.
It is therefore with great pleasure that I, with Congress President Péter Fröhlich, welcome you to what will be
the first official joint meeting of both societies under the new name of European Society for Trauma and
Emergency Surgery.
