From the rabbi’s Desk
The best talk I have ever heard at a Rabbinic convention came not from a Rabbi, a scholar, a
mental health professional or a Rosh Yeshiva. It came from a 19 year old young man who had
recently returned from his year in Israel. To the credit of the convention chairs, he was invited
to share the perspective of his peers on the state of the Orthodox Community and the role of
Rabbis in leading it. He shared many important insights that day, but one of them in particular
has stuck with me ever since.
“Not
Just Your
Parent’s
Rabbi”
“When kids are growing up and they need someone to speak to,” he said, “they don’t think of
going to their Shul Rabbi for one simple reason. Children perceive ‘The Rabbi’ as their parent’s
Rabbi, not their own.” I thought of his words last week when visiting with students from our
community currently spending the year in Israel. Yocheved and I tried to communicate that
when they return from their year in Israel we welcome a close relationship with them. We told
them that we hope that they know that they didn’t leave their access to Rebbeim and teachers
behind in Israel, but they have others to turn to in America who care deeply about them and are
available to talk, learn together or help in any other way.
Obviously, a relationship between a Rabbi and the children of the community begins long before their year in
Israel and needs to be cultivated from an early age. Since becoming the Rabbi of BRS eight years ago, I have had
the privilege and blessing of naming almost every one of the close to 335 children who have been born in our
community during that time. Sadly, in too many cases, I haven’t had the chance to use that name many times since
then, as it is extremely challenging to spend time with the more than 1,000 children in our community.
In this week’s parasha, Terumah, the Torah describes the keruvim, the two figurines that adorned the top of the
Aron, the ark that housed the tablets in the Mishkan. These golden angels were molded in the image of children.
One would think that the centerpiece of the Holy of Holies would have the image of a pious old man or a virtuous
aged woman. Why would our great Torah, its values and teachings be associated specifically with children?
Though the answer may sound clichéd, I believe it is true – children are our future. As we think about the
Torah we are to imagine it being adorned with and protected by the faces of children. Children are exuberant,
enthusiastic, filled with energy, purity, curiosity and wholesomeness.
Shul Rabbis, in my opinion, need to work harder to not only be Rabbis to adults and parents, but to be the Rabbis
for the children of our communities who are indeed our very future. I personally am committed to spend more
time in our teen minyan, at onegs, visiting our schools and spending time informally with our children.
However, I need your help. Please encourage your children to be receptive to a relationship. Remind them to
come say hello, to wish a good Shabbos and to come to a youth or teen event. There is no better time to forge
a strong bond than when a child is young. For years, I watched with great admiration and frankly with slight
jealously as every BRS child approached Rabbi Klein z’l at some point over Shabbos to receive a candy coupled
with a warm smile and loving handshake.
I don’t have the age, wisdom or charm of Rabbi Klein, but I do have the will and desire to greet every BRS child
and wish them a good Shabbos by name.
I would be honored if you would help me by sending your children up after davening so that I may give them a
candy, wish them a good Shabbos and hopefully, be their Rabbi in addition to just yours.
Rabbi Efrem Goldberg

HAlACHIC queSTION OF THe Week
Q: I was not Observant when I got married and had non-kosher witnesses at my chupa and on my
kesubah. Do I need to do anything?
A: According to Halacha, to be a kosher witness one must be a Jewish male over the age of 13, shabbos
and kosher observant and not related to the bride or groom. If the witnesses either under the chupa or
on the kesubah don’t meet those criteria, a new chupa and new kesubah need to be arranged. This can
be done in a confidential, modest ceremony in my office. Alternatively, it can be an opportunity for a
joyful, public celebration and a second wedding.
Please submit your question of the week on any topic to Rabbi Efrem Goldberg at reg@brsonline.org
Building the Mishkan. Hashem
commanded Moshe to build a
Mishkan (Sanctuary), symbolizing His
presence among the Jewish people. The
instructions respecting the construction
of the utensils and the actual building
needed in the Mishkan are detailed in
this Parsha.
The Mishkan consisted of the Chatzeir
(Outer Court), containing the altar for
burnt offerings and the laver used by the
Kohanim (Priests), and the Tabernacle,
which was divided into two chambers --
(a) the Outer Chamber (the Kodesh) to
which only Priests who performed sacred
duties had access and which contained
the Shulchan (Table of Showbread),
Menorah, and Mizbeiach HaKatoress
(Alter of Incense); and (b) the Inner
Chamber (the Kodesh Kadoshim
[“Holy of Holies”]), which only the
Kohen Gadol (High Priest) entered on
Yom Kippur and which contained the
sacred Aron (the Ark holding the 10
Commandments).
When making plans for your Purim Seudah, please have in mind those who
may not otherwise have an invitation. The mitzvah of hosting guests is best
fulfilled not by inviting close friends, but by welcoming those that may
otherwise feel neglected. Please give particular consideration to those who
may be alone.
Celebrating Our Teens by Rabbi Uri Pilichowski
This Week We Celebrate our Teens’ Month of Advocacy
From the beginning of February until the beginning of March is Israel advocacy month for BRS teens and
teens all across the country find their inner advocate and stick up for a strong Israel and a strong America. For
our teens, the ball got rolling last Shabbat with the fourth annual national Teen Annual Israel Advocacy
Shabbaton. The shabbaton attracted over 110 teens who sat and listened to Aaron Kaplowitz, the Director of
Communications for the Israeli Embassy in Washington, DC, Abby Cable, Director of Foreign Policy at AIPAC in Washington,
DC, Jeremy Horelick, Deputy Director of AIPAC here in the Southeast, and Congressman Tom Rooney. The teens who were
attending Policy Conference – over 40 of them! – attended a special session on what to expect at Policy Conference and what
the teens objective should be at Policy Conference. AIPAC’s Policy Conference in Washington, DC attracts over 12,000
advocates of a strong US‐Israel relationship. It also ends of our month of Advocacy. What is most impressive is how many of
our teens now personal relationships have with members of congress. Some Congressman have even given our teens their
cell numbers. Celebrate our Israel advocates with me this month!
information to enable them to
advocate to members of Congress,
Senate and the Administration
about a stronger US‐Israel
relationship. The highlight of the
Shabbaton was Congressman Tom
Rooney’s talk to the teens on
Shabbat afternoon. Solidifying the
talks given all Shabbat
Congressman Rooney talked about
a strong US‐Israel bond.
By the time we parted ways, i actually
loved them...
I recently read an article that I thought we
could all learn an important lesson about
connecting with members of the greater
Jewish community. It was written by Rabbi
Ilan Feldman, the prominent Rabbi of a
large orthodox shul in Atlanta. Please read
an excerpt from his article below.
Inspire yourself to inspire others…
Josh & simone
------------------------
I experienced our lost potential years ago when I joined a Federation/
UJA mission to Israel in 1988. In the midst of the “Who Is A Jew”
controversy in the late 1980’s, and the deep feelings triggered
on both sides of the debate, a strong sense of alienation emerged
between Atlanta’s small Orthodox community and the non-Orthodox
establishment. It was suggested that it would be worthwhile for me,
as the assistant rabbi of Atlanta’s largest Orthodox shul, to participate
in the Jewish Federation’s annual mission to Israel. Many members
of Federation’s leadership were going to be on the trip, and my goal
would be to put a human face on Orthodoxy and reduce tensions
between our worlds.
I participated in the Federation trip with a specific strategy. I knew
that the trip was planned, and would be executed, without religious
sensitivities in mind, and was thus well aware that there would be
restaurants in which I could not dine, Shabbos programs that would
make me uncomfortable and tour guides whose concept of Jewish
history began in 1948. I decided that I would raise no objections,
so as not reinforce any negative stereotypes of Orthodox coercion.
As a yeshiva graduate who had left kollel only a few years before,
restraining from making pronouncements or judgments required
significant self control. When shehechiyanu was recited instead of
rending garments at the sighting of the Temple Mount, I said nothing.
When they offered those who were interested to tour Masada on
Shabbos as an alternative to going to shul, I made no comment.
When the guide who introduced Mount Carmel dismissed the famous
episode of Elijah’s clash with the Baal worshipers as merely a fable
I engaged in no debate. Even when a guide described a mikvah as an
ancient ritual bath that used to be visited by Biblical Jews thousands
of years ago, I waited hours before saying anything. I spent ten
days sitting on a bus kibitzing with people who were resentful of
Orthodox Jews while my every Orthodox sensibility was powerfully,
though unintentionally, challenged. I had only one goal – to establish
relationships with my tour mates.
By all accounts, I was wildly successful in my mission. By the end of
the trip, people were insisting that I address them in group sessions,
asking me halachic questions, directing the bus driver to restaurants
in which I could eat. To this day, my relationship with many opinion
makers in Atlanta remains influenced by that trip, and some have even
Page 10
Jewish Experience
Boca Raton Synagogue
Valuing Diversity • Celebrating Unity
made major contributions to the growth of Orthodox institutions due
to the relationships we forged.
But the one who was most transformed on that trip was me.
What I expected to encounter was a group of 200 Jews devoid of
feelings for Israel or religion. What I discovered instead were 200
very religious, spiritual, passionately devoted, proud Jews who knew
very little about Torah and who lacked a Jewish vocabulary, but who
loved their Jewish brethren in Israel, respected holiness and possessed
a passion for Judaism as they knew it that rivaled the passion I had
seen in my frum friends. In short, I learned to respect them. And I
learned that “secular” Jews are often very religious Jews who do not
know ritual, and whose devotion and willingness to sacrifice for the
Judaism they do know is inspiring. By the time we parted ways, I
actually loved them. Once I made this discovery, I was both surprised
and embarrassed that it was new to me. As is so often the case, a
perspective can only be properly re-examined when observed from
the outside.
When I joined the Federation trip, I was an Orthodox Jew hoping
to survive 10 days in Israel with non-observant Jews, and they were
going to survive having me around. At the conclusion of the trip, I
was an Orthodox Jew profoundly aware of the souls of my Jewish
brothers and sisters, looking beyond their ignorance, appreciating
their goodness and sensing their thirst for connection to the Divine.
To them, I had become a knowledgeable Jew they wanted to be close
to.
What happened on that trip — and many have experienced this —
can happen in the millions, but only inside a paradigm that does not
prevail today. It is the paradigm of purposeful kiddush Hashem.
