<strong>The</strong> scribble sentences on the Zuniga map are clearly related to sentences in John Smith’s<br />
True Relation. Captain Smith wrote in True Relation that Opechancanough, the brother of Chief<br />
Powhatan, told him “of certain men cloathed at a place called Ocanahona, clothed like me.”<br />
Most map interpreters agree that Ocanahonan [A] was on Roanoke River, despite ‘Morattac’ [B]<br />
being written on the river to the south. <strong>The</strong> map also states, “Here remayneth 4 men clothed that<br />
came from Roonock to Ochanahowan 12 ” 6 above the word “Pakrakwich”, on what is generally<br />
assumed to be the Neuse River [C]. Smith also wrote, “We agreed with the king of Paspahegh to<br />

“Ocanahowan” is Siouan <strong>for</strong> “many people gather here”; the Algonquian equivalent is “Occaneechi”.
