Christian allegorical <strong>in</strong>terpretation^.^' The Physio/ogus <strong>and</strong> its first Lat<strong>in</strong> imitators make<br />

no mention whatsoever <strong>of</strong> falcons or hawks.<br />

A major change to <strong>the</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong> text occurs sometime around <strong>the</strong> tenth century. The<br />

text is greatly exp<strong>and</strong>ed, both <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> number <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> length <strong>of</strong> entries, by additions from<br />

Isidore <strong>of</strong> Seville's Etymologiae. From this family <strong>of</strong> manuscripts, named versio B-Is by<br />

McCulloch, descend most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vernacular bestiaries that will be written over <strong>the</strong><br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g centuries. However, falcons <strong>and</strong> hawks rema<strong>in</strong> absent from B-Is, despite<br />

Isidore hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> his own work. Indeed, birds <strong>of</strong> prey do not f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

way <strong>in</strong>to bestiary works until <strong>the</strong> twelfth century. At this time, a second transformation<br />

<strong>of</strong> bestiaries occurs. A huge expansion <strong>of</strong> content, adopted from Isidore <strong>of</strong> Seville <strong>and</strong><br />

contemporary encyclopedists such as Bartholomaeus Anglicus, is comb<strong>in</strong>ed with a<br />

reorganization <strong>of</strong> material <strong>in</strong>to discrete sections on beasts <strong>and</strong> birds, follow<strong>in</strong>g Isidore's<br />

divisions, <strong>and</strong> also a change <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>terpretation: allegorical <strong>and</strong> mystical Christian<br />

<strong>in</strong>terpretation <strong>of</strong> animals' behavior usually, but not always, gives way to moral teach<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

about everyday life. Occasionally, moraliz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terpretations are elim<strong>in</strong>ated altoge<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

With <strong>the</strong> new expansion <strong>of</strong> content, falcons <strong>and</strong> hawks are f<strong>in</strong>ally <strong>in</strong>cluded, <strong>and</strong> given<br />

entries that seem to be taken <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir entirety from encyclopedic sources.<br />

<strong>Italian</strong> versions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong> bestiaries beg<strong>in</strong> to appear <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> thirteenth century,<br />

though <strong>the</strong> known manuscripts are from <strong>the</strong> fourteenth century or later.22 Occasionally<br />

<strong>the</strong>y may be bound toge<strong>the</strong>r with falconry manuals: Kenneth McKenzie tells <strong>of</strong> a<br />

manuscript <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bibliothkque Nationale, numbered Ital. 450, that has a Libro degli<br />

21 For <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> evolution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> allegory over time from <strong>the</strong>se bestiaries <strong>through</strong> vernacular<br />

versions, see Luig<strong>in</strong>a Mor<strong>in</strong>i, Bestiari medievali (Tor<strong>in</strong>o: Giulio E<strong>in</strong>audi editore, 1996), <strong>and</strong> Kenneth<br />

McKenzie, "Unpublished Manuscripts <strong>of</strong> <strong>Italian</strong> Bestiaries," PMLA 20 (1905).<br />

22 McKenzie discusses <strong>the</strong> dat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se manuscripts, 382 ff.
