Remembering the advice of his mentors “Rich Kid” completed his education in Network Administration, Political Science, World History and Theology. Focused on fulfilling his dreams, he turned his attention to forming an affiliation with “Nite Starr” Sound System performing at parties, weddings, stage shows and other special events. From 2004 to present, he injected his energy into recording by showcasing his lyrical prowess and versatility working with “Anchor Recording Studios”, “E55 Production Records” and “Stumpy Production Records” in Jamaica. Also “The Lair Recording Studios”, “Explorer Recording Studios”, “Slamm Productions”, “Iguana Recordings” and Eagle Force Entertainment’s “Eye One Records” in Canada. He took his talent to the next level by releasing two debut singles in 2004 “Freaky Freaky Ting” and “Penny for my Touch” on the C&G Promotion Label. He later released the single for the song “In The Mix”, which won him the Toronto International Reggae Music Award for “Best Video”. JULION’S VIEWS One more quarter passes by as Canadian Reggae continues its journey into more and more Canadian homes infiltrating more musical pallets, encouraging possible sales opportunities. In the last issue, I took the time to focus on a negative that continues to stunt this ‘industry’ in our collective inefficiency to sell Canadian reggae music on a consistent basis. Some folks took great offense to the words written, but truth be told, it’s all good with me if folks don’t share my vision or opinions in an environment where there is limited growth of our genre. It does show that we are not on the same page, so there is definitely room for growth. Many of those who took offense completely missed the point! The one who did not miss the point was Carrie Mullings – CHRY 105.5fm, Monday mornings 10:00am – 12:00pm, the only Canadian reggae show that boasts playing 100% Canadian reggae. And she does! When the lynch mob was called to rise against my words, Carrie stood firm and refused to participate in the hanging of the truth. When I asked her why she didn’t get involved with criticism of my words, she shocked me with her response… She said, “You are right, I don’t do enough… There are so many artists music that I don’t have, many I don’t know and who doesn’t know of me… More needs to be done!” In case you forgot the three or so sentences before, Carrie Mullings plays 100% Canadian reggae. As our conversation continued, we were speaking the same language. We are / were addressing the same issues of lack of sales REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S VIEWS opportunities for Canadian reggae music and how to properly address or change that situation. One of my frustrations and queries to her was the lack of a Canadian reggae chart. So many radio personalities, so many shows, so many spins, and so many years and to my knowledge there has NEVER been an agreed up, nationally supported reggae chart. Some have tried separately at different times, but nothing on a collective basis. How does the rest of the world take us seriously if we don’t do it ourselves? A chart indicates that there is something going on and that we think something of the music, so we take the time to chart it. It tells interested fans which songs and which artists are hot at the time and which tunes to buy. It tells foreign DJs which artists to contact! It creates interest for the artists who wish to rise on the charts. It increases the quality of the musical production and delivery. IT GROWS AN INDUSTRY! Carrie went on to tell me that there will be national chart in the works and will be happening in January of 2008 and that she and a few of the personalities were in talks about the chart for some time. That made me smile! Special mention has to go out to Galaxie internet radio with Steve Neale’s assistance has been charting Canadian reggae for a time now and to get that info just check out www.canadianreggaeworld.co m/Galaxie-2007-09.htm as we put up that chart as Steve sends them and to find out more about Galaxie check out www.galaxie.ca. Before I go on to sing Carrie’s praises any further I pay great respect to D.B. Hawkes, formerly of CIUT 89.5fm, who propelled many live acts to notoriety at his own personal cost. Much respect to Patrick Roots, of CIUT 89.5fm, who has always opened his show to any progressive thinking artist to push themselves as well as to me personally giving CRW weekly spots to promote Canadian reggae music consistently showing support. The King Turbo crew. CIUT, as well as Ron Nelson, CKLN 88.1fm for their pushing of Canadian based artists within their circles, Leo Cripps in Calgary playing many all- Canadian shows selling and promoting the music. Natty B of CHRY 105.5fm, who not only plays the music but promotes a Canadian reggae chart. As we propel into the 21st century we need a greater push by many of these volunteers, to be single minded in their approach to selling Canadian. There may be a bit of resistance now, but in time they will see the opportunities that will open for all of us. As I continued to write, I thought it best that Carrie answered some questions and with those answers, would shed a little light on her credentials as well as what she is all about, and a chance for you the reader/listener to aid in her continued growth if you wish to see further ‘upliftment’ of the Canadian reggae scene. Q. Rhythm365.com’s relationship with you... A. I was introduced to www.rhythm365.com thru King David while co-hosting with him on his show Positive Vibrations that airs Fridays 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. On July 29th, 2005 Tony Williams and crew came to Canada to showcase Canadian Talent and rhythm365 DJs along with King David and myself at Club Paradise. While in Canada Mr. Williams heard a recording of the Monday morning fill-in spot I was doing that I started calling “Rebel Vibez”. The “Singers in the Neighborhood” segment had him interested and with very little discussion I was linked up to a simulcast with www.rhythm365.com. We have been running the link for 28 months now. Thank you Tony Williams! Q. Relationship and work with Montreal Reggae Festival... A. My relationship began when two of Toronto’s invited reggaeXclusive -- Web Site: www.reggaexclusive.com --- Phone: 416-287-1335 -- Email: reggaexclusive@rogers.com Pg - 5 radio personalities did not show at the festival in 2004 and the opportunity presented itself for me to fill their MC spots on the festival. It initially was a couple intros the first day but the festival Spokesperson and Host invited me to do more over the remainder of the weekend. Q. CHRY 105.5, how long on air, how you came up with the idea for an ALL Canadian show… A. I have been on air with CHRY since 2003. I started on Caribbean Crucible with Luther Brown, G-Russ and Tipper then joined Cool Runnings with Sir B. I started filling in a TBA spot Mondays in the latter part of 2004. In 2005 the spot was given to Rebel Vibez and starting this year we changed our content which was 70% Canadian and 30% International to 100% Canadian Content. Strictly Homegrown as I like to refer to it. The idea is merely that of representing your own talent. Canada has a massive wealth of talented artists and musicians in our reggae industry that aren’t getting the amount of airplay it takes to “BUSS” an artist. There are many reggae shows on CHRY’s station but there wasn’t a Canadian Reggae show, so I guess you can say I was filling a void. Rebel Vibez has been broadcasting 5 hour shows on the holidays for 2 years now. I would love to do a 5 hour broadcast weekly! Rebel Vibez is not the first to provide listeners with 5 hour broadcasts of Canadian Reggae; King David did it before I did. You know King David was the first person to share his stage with me? King David was master of ceremonies at Steele’s Uncorrupted CD Launch and he handed me the microphone and encouraged me to go on stage and introduce an artist. I remember shaking and King David telling me not to be nervous I could do it and I did. Thanks King David!! Q. Why continue with an All Canadian show? Is it popular? (Continued on page 12)
