SCHOOL CREST<br />
<strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Garcia</strong> <strong>Diego</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Crest:<br />
The coat of arms of <strong>Bishop</strong> Francisco <strong>Garcia</strong> <strong>Diego</strong> y Moreno, the first bishop of the Californias, is a single shield<br />
depicting Our Lady of Refuge. Three ranks of tassels are indicative of the office of the bishop. The school crest was<br />
designed in 1959 and incorporates four significant symbols associated with the school. The school crest/coat of arms is<br />
displayed on formal school documents, including the school diploma.<br />
The four quadrants of the shield symbolize:<br />
Top Left: Three angels representing the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.<br />
Top Right: The California Bear representing the State.<br />

Dear Friends,<br />
As I begin my fourth year at <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>High</strong> I believe more<br />
firmly than ever in the <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>High</strong> difference. That<br />
difference, simply put, is the relationships among students,<br />
families, alumni, friends, faculty, staff, and trustees.<br />
A school’s culture can be defined by the values it instills,<br />
beliefs shared and the traditions celebrated. This culture<br />
provides the foundation for our informal curriculum. It is<br />
this culture that enables us to really know our students as<br />
individuals and it remains with our graduates long after<br />
their four years of formal curriculum end at graduation.<br />
Our school’s culture is rooted in our mission to promote the<br />
spiritual, academic, physical, and emotional development<br />
of our students. The fruits of this work are seen in many<br />
aspects of campus life. This spirit and camaraderie were<br />
ever-present last spring during the <strong>2011</strong> playoff games<br />
as the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams made tremendous<br />
runs at CIF titles. And for those of us privileged to attend<br />
the senior class retreat in March, we witnessed students<br />
and faculty as they shared experiences of personal faith<br />
journeys. The presence of God’s work was evident in each<br />
and every participant.<br />
Many of the remarkable successes of our students are a<br />
direct result of the wonderful opportunities provided by<br />
our generous benefactors. You, our benefactors, help<br />
make the <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>High</strong> difference. Your unwavering support<br />
and unparalled generosity have afforded hundreds of<br />
students the chance to learn and grow in this special<br />
environment.<br />
It takes the entire <strong>Bishop</strong> community to make a difference<br />
in the lives of our high school students. The following<br />
pages celebrate the partnership that we as faculty, staff<br />
and administration share with you, our parents, alumni<br />
and friends. We thank you!<br />

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to take this<br />
opportunity to thank the cadre of people that makes <strong>Bishop</strong><br />
such a remarkable place.<br />
First, I would like to thank all of our current families, alumni<br />
and generous benefactors who continue to support <strong>Bishop</strong><br />
year after year. It is only with your support that we can<br />
continue to implement our mission and grow our school.<br />
Because of you, we were able to:<br />
• Offer financial aid to 60% of our school families<br />
• Convert our campus to solar power<br />
• Completely renovate our science classrooms and outfit<br />
them with state-of-the-art supplies, software and<br />
technology<br />
• Beef up our support for the Arts with a wonderful<br />
Evening of the Arts program<br />
• Re-wire the entire campus to meet the future technology<br />
needs of the school<br />
It is because of you that we are able to make a difference in<br />
the lives of our students on a daily basis.<br />
I would also like to thank our tremendous administration,<br />
faculty and staff for the exemplary job that they perform on<br />
a daily basis. You truly go the extra mile to support, nurture,<br />
and educate our students. We are so blessed to have such<br />
a dedicated team to prepare our students to be “Ready for<br />
College and Ready for Life.”<br />
I would like to thank our students— without whom we would<br />
not exist. I have gotten to know many of you throughout the<br />
years, and I am constantly amazed at your poise, integrity,<br />
intellect and grace.<br />
Thank you parents who sacrifice and make the choice to give<br />
your child an independent, Catholic, co-educational, collegepreparatory<br />
education. You are making an investment in<br />
your student’s future, for which we are grateful.<br />
Last, I have to thank the tremendous people who make up<br />
our Board of Trustees. You volunteer your time, gifts and<br />
talents to the school on a daily basis. I would especially like to<br />
thank Peter Da Ros, Sr. Angela Hallahan, Ralph Iannelli, Carla<br />
O’Neill, Lynette Patters and B. Williams for their service over<br />

The Boys Basketball team<br />
won the Frontier League<br />
Championship for the first<br />
time in school history. Junior<br />
Elias Munoz was named Santa<br />
Barbara County Player of the<br />
Year and led his team to the CIF<br />
Championship game! The Girls<br />
Basketball team endured a<br />
tough schedule in the Tri-Valley<br />
League but it paid dividends<br />
as they advanced to the CIF<br />
semi-finals. Boys Baseball had<br />

Have you ever watched clips of a movie without a musical<br />
score? It’s not the same, is it? Likewise, without Beverly<br />
Pfeiler VanWingerden’s passion for music, our school<br />
community would be a lesser place. Our students in the<br />
Advanced Band class benefit tremendously from her love<br />
of and expertise in the field of music. The school as a<br />
whole then benefits from the hours of patient practice she<br />
oversees to ensure the critical acclaim of our concert band.<br />
Beverly is a member of the <strong>Bishop</strong>’s graduating class of<br />
1969. After marriage to Jerry VanWingerden and the birth<br />
of four children, Bev went back to college, graduating<br />
magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music<br />
from UCSB. Fortunately her allegiance to her Alma Mater<br />
was strong and she accepted a position teaching music<br />
here at <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Diego</strong> in 1998.<br />
In addition to writing for local church groups, last fall<br />
Beverly took up the challenge of composing a musical score<br />
for <strong>Bishop</strong>’s winter production of Dead Man Walking. None<br />
other than the National Coordinator of the DMW <strong>School</strong><br />
Project asked for permission to use Beverly’s composition<br />
in high school and college productions around the country<br />
and throughout Europe as well. Not bad for a local gal who<br />
hails from the tiny beach community of Carpinteria.<br />
So we thank you Bev, for all you do to enrich the curriculum<br />
and create the soundtrack for <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Diego</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />

Th 40th annual BGDHS golf tournament was held at the Glen Annie Golf Club on Friday, May 6, <strong>2011</strong>. Thanks to our generous sponsors, volunteers,<br />
tournament planning committee, raffle, auction donors, and participants. This year’s event was again sold out and raised over $28,000. A<br />
portion of the proceeds from the tournament are used to support the BDHS Legacy Scholarship that recognizes students who are the children or<br />
grandchildren of a <strong>Bishop</strong> alumni.<br />

Vic Bottiani, along with other members of the <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>High</strong> Dad’s Club, started the<br />
golf tournament 40 years ago. This year was the first time in 40 years Vic would not<br />
be there to support <strong>Bishop</strong>. Vic Loved sports and over the years he supported not<br />
only <strong>Bishop</strong> but UCSB as well, and was a huge Dodger fan. Vic, on occasion, felt that<br />
he could do a better job of coaching than whoever was coaching and he absolutely<br />
knew he was the best official and never made a bad call.<br />
Vic was a alum of Catholic <strong>High</strong>’s Class of 1949. He sent his children and<br />
grandchildren to <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>High</strong> as well. This tournament would not have continued<br />
over these last 40 years had it not been for the vision and support of the late Vic<br />
Bottiani. We thank him for giving so generously of himself!<br />

As the Director of Admission here at <strong>Bishop</strong>, the question I get<br />
most often is “what makes your school different from other<br />
private high schools?” Putting aside for a moment all of the<br />
obvious benefits of our curriculum, campus and dedicated<br />
faculty, what comes to mind most often when I answer that<br />
question is the word “community.” <strong>Bishop</strong> is a place that<br />
welcomes you early and often. My kids grew up playing<br />
tournaments in the gym, attending summer sports camps and<br />
going to <strong>Bishop</strong> football and basketball games. They were de<br />
facto members of the <strong>Bishop</strong> community long before they ever<br />
applied for admission. Once enrolled, they became full-fledged<br />
members of the <strong>Bishop</strong> community on many different levels.<br />
Their classmates got to know each other while preparing for<br />
Spirit Week, their respective athletic teams bonded during<br />
practices and competitions, and over time they formed lasting<br />
friendships with peers and teachers alike. We parents benefit<br />
from this sense of community as well. We are welcome to be on<br />
campus for all school activities; we support each other in what<br />
I have termed “child logistics” (also known as driving everyone<br />
everywhere) and a great many of us socialize together quite<br />
often. We remain a part of the <strong>Bishop</strong> community even after<br />
our kids head off to college. It is always so nice to see former<br />
students and parents return to campus for Alumni games or<br />
to bump into a fellow BDHS grad out in the Santa Barbara<br />
community at large. Through the good times and the bad the<br />

bonds of this tight knit community remain strong after 50+<br />
years and that is truly a blessing.<br />
A few weeks ago we took the “generations” photo as we do<br />
every year for this publication. It is interesting to see the<br />
currently enrolled children and grandchildren of BDHS alumni<br />
assembled all in one spot. While looking at the image I was<br />
struck by the diversity of the kids in the photo, even though<br />
they were called together because of something they shared in<br />
common. There were artists, athletes, mathletes, cheerleaders<br />
and drama students represented. It was a nice reminder that<br />
<strong>Bishop</strong> has something to offer just about everyone.<br />
The bottom line is that <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Diego</strong> is an academically<br />
rigorous, faith based, college preparatory high school with<br />
the added benefit of being part of a wonderful community.<br />
So why not bring your children and grandchildren on to the<br />
campus as often as possible. Help them to become part of this<br />
place and ease their transition to high school when the time<br />
comes. Which brings me to my last point, when the time for<br />
high school does roll around…please do come see me!<br />

Our Counseling and Student Services Program (C&SS) provides<br />
comprehensive academic, career and personal/social support<br />
for all students to maximize student potential and academic<br />
achievement. As educators, we partner with families to meet<br />
the learning needs of all students so that they may complete<br />
the rigorous, college-preparatory curriculum that <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>High</strong><br />
offers. Each year, students are provided individual attention<br />
and guidance in working toward university admission.<br />

<strong>Bishop</strong>’s Academic and College Counseling Center has recently<br />
been renovated. Our Center offers state-of-the-art college<br />
research tools, and access to our Academic and College<br />
Counselors. Students are assigned to counselors according<br />
to last name, facilitating consistency and close relationships<br />
throughout all four high school years. Students in need<br />
of additional support, have access to our licensed MFT for<br />
personal/social counseling, and our Resource Specialist for<br />
accommodations with learning disabilities.

SPECIAL EVENTS<br />
was the theme for the <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>High</strong> Gala Auction held on March 5, <strong>2011</strong> on<br />
the school campus. The three amazing chairs/pirate wenches were Claire ( Bohnett) 81’ Mon, Esther (Van Wingerden) 84’ Brand and<br />
Anna Tetherow, along with a large group of enthusiastic parent volunteers who helped to make this year’s event the most successful<br />
in the school’s history.<br />
It was truly a privilege for <strong>Bishop</strong> to honor and thank Ralph and Melissa Iannelli. They have been ardent supporters of our school and<br />
its mission for many years. During the “Live” portion of the event the Iannelli’s offered a special cash match to the Adopt-A-Student<br />
paddle raise, inspiring over 85% of the dinner guests to donate. The <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>High</strong> community is profoundly grateful to Ralph and<br />
Melissa for their unwavering support of our school and its students.<br />

The Parent Advisory Board is a<br />
service organization made up of the<br />
parents or guardians of currently<br />
enrolled students. Parent Advisory<br />
Board representatives are selected<br />
each year to support the needs of<br />
the class they represent, along with<br />
addressing the general needs of the<br />
school.<br />
The Parent Advisory Board<br />
focuses on fostering cooperation,<br />
communication and community<br />
among all elements of the school<br />
and provides valuable services to the<br />
school community by orchestrating<br />
support for student events that<br />
enrich each current student's high<br />
school experience.<br />
Parents are encouraged to bring<br />
their enthusiasm and skills to make<br />
campus life for students that much<br />
more memorable. Together they<br />
support the class retreats, Spirit<br />
Week, Prom and the Evening of the<br />
Arts. PAB sponsors an After Prom<br />
Party that offers our students a safe<br />
After Prom experience. This event<br />
is widely supported by our parents<br />
and by the larger community.<br />
It is a wonderfully unique experience<br />
to serve with fellow parents and<br />

The Cardinal Club is a service<br />
organization made up of parents,<br />
community members and <strong>Bishop</strong>’s<br />
Athletic Director. All parents whose<br />
student participates in <strong>Bishop</strong> Athletics<br />
are welcomed to get involved in this fun,<br />
spirited, and family-oriented group.<br />
Our mission is to fundraise for the Athletic<br />
Department; facilitate communication<br />
between the school, coaches, parents and<br />
student athletes; promote and recognize<br />
the achievement of our student athletes;<br />
and provide an opportunity for parents<br />
and students to participate in the <strong>Bishop</strong><br />
athletic experience.<br />
The Cardinal Club organizes The Cardinal<br />
Event, the largest fundraising event of<br />
the year for the Athletic Department. The<br />
Club organizes the sports banquets at<br />
the end of each season to recognize each<br />
student athlete, and the Club coordinates<br />
with the team parents who keep all<br />
parties informed about team activities<br />
and results.
CAMPUS MINISTRY<br />
The <strong>Bishop</strong> difference is – FAITH! All of us at <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Garcia</strong> <strong>Diego</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> are called to be<br />
ministers of the faith. Regardless of one’s religious affiliation, all are encouraged to explore,<br />
develop and live out our individual beliefs and spiritual journeys. We are constantly challenging<br />
one another to teach our faith by living it on a daily basis. We work every day at creating an ideal<br />
Catholic Christian school community. It is the difference!<br />
Putting it simply, our liturgies are sensational. They are moments of real celebrations of faith! The<br />
campus ministry team works diligently to create Eucharistic celebrations that connect with the<br />
<strong>Bishop</strong> community by warmly welcoming new students in the fall and honoring the Juniors as<br />
upperclassmen; by recognizing Seniors with their mothers and fathers and appreciating alumni<br />
as special members of the Cardinal community. We celebrate our graduates at a Baccalaureate<br />
Mass in one of our local supportive parishes.<br />
Retreats are moments that we take to draw back from our normal world in order to know God more<br />
and to find Christ within ourselves and in others. At <strong>Bishop</strong>, each grade level has the opportunity<br />
to participate in retreats that focus on growing in faith and unity as children of God. The Senior<br />
Retreat is one that typically stands out as quite memorable for our graduates.<br />
Throughout the year we remember other parts of our all-important faith walks by participating<br />
in activities that correlate with the liturgical year such as penance services, the recitation of the<br />
rosary, Thanksgiving reflection, the lighting of the Advent wreath and a May Crowning, just to<br />
name a few. We are grateful to have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in our chapel three days<br />
a week, supported by many members of our local Catholic community.<br />
During the school year, every student at <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>High</strong> is called to participate and complete a<br />
specified number of service hours. The purpose is to provide, through personal and community<br />
outreach, the experience of God’s grace, which will help students in their faith journeys. Through<br />
active participation, students develop new friends, rejoice in discovering talents, experience the<br />
joy of giving, and glorify God.<br />
It is with much excitement that we look forward to the addition of our new Ministry Center! This<br />
center promises to add an incredible component to the ministry program. Be on the lookout for<br />
an announcement about its grand opening and inaugural blessing. For more information about<br />

At the end of each school day, after all is said and done, the students are reminded the most<br />

The Advancement Office coordinates the fundraising and<br />
public relations efforts of <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. Students have<br />
benefited from the generosity of parents, alumni, faculty , staff,<br />
community members and Trustees who support the school's<br />
mission, and understand the importance of a first rate college<br />
preparatory Catholic education.<br />
Whether you are an alum of Santa Barbara Catholic <strong>High</strong> or<br />
<strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Garcia</strong> <strong>Diego</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>, your association with <strong>Bishop</strong><br />
lasts a lifetime. But our community does not end there. Parents<br />
and faculty members, both past and present, are also an<br />
important part of the extended <strong>Bishop</strong> family.<br />
<strong>Bishop</strong> is an amazing place, and the Office of Advancement is<br />
here to serve you. We are committed to providing and creating<br />

full advantage of the resources available within our own<br />
