For Indigenous communities,
food is more
than just sustenance, it is
a significant part of our
self-identity. In the past,
agriculture and food was
a large part of who we are
as a people. Yet, many of
our youth have lost their
incentive and knowledge
of how to plant, grow and
harvest our foods. Many
people want to change
this, and one of these
groups are the OCIFS
Members.
The Oneida
Community Integrated
Food Systems (OCIFS)
members consist of various
food, health and fiscal
departments within
the Oneida Nation of
Wisconsin. The five
members that are a part
of this team are: Oneida
Nation Farm,
Tsyunhehkwa, Food
Distribution, Health
Promotions and Oneida
Market. There are two
food producing and processing
entities which are
the Oneida Nation
Farm/Apple Orchard and
Tsyunhehkwa. The Food
Distribution Center
serves as a distribution
center for low income
community members as
well as a food warehouse.
Health Promotions assists
OCIFS
Oneida Community Integrated Food Systems
in the connection
between diet and health
through numerous
departments and projects
such as: Wellness
Coaching, Diet
Counseling, Consultant
services to the Oneida
Schools and the Elderly
Diabetic Luncheon, just
to name a few. The
Oneida Market provides
the retail outlet for the
Oneida food products.
The OCIFS group is
tirelessly working to
improve the Nations
quality of food, educating
them of certain health
risks, increasing employment
and youth opportunities,
and assisting in
bringing our people closer
together. They each
run a difficult and highly
successful program, and
yet they still find time to
come together and create
various projects that the
community has asked for
such as:
• Oneida Farmers'
Market
• Falling Leaves 4-H
club
• Cultural Youth Activity
Book
• Growing Gardeners
workshop
• Farm to School
Program
• Youth Day on the Farm
• Youth Summer
Entrepreneur Initiative
The OCIFS entities
work cooperatively to try
and bring about monumental
changes in
Oneida’s food systems.
There are many ways you
can help your Nation, one
of them is to support it’s
members. So buy your
meat from your own
Farm, your produce from
your own Orchard and
the many products from
Tsyunhehkwa that are
sold at the Oneida
Market. It not only provides
you with the best
quality and value, but it
helps the Oneida people
on the road to self-sufficiency.
Many Oneida
youth have lost
their incentive
and knowledge
of how to plant,
foods. The
OCIFS entities
work together to
bring about positive
change by
connecting with
the youth and
community. At
