The William Swanston Charitable Fund became a supporting organization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Community</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mahoning</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> in October 2010. Supporting<br />
organizations, by definition, are designated by <strong>the</strong> IRS as organizations that<br />
support <strong>the</strong> grantmaking activities <strong>of</strong> community foundations. Most notably The<br />
William Swanston Charitable Fund, previously limited to <strong>Mahoning</strong> County, was<br />
granted permission by <strong>the</strong> court to include Trumbull County organizations in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
grantmaking. This better reflects <strong>the</strong> footprint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Mahoning</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> and The Raymond John Wean <strong>Foundation</strong>.<br />

“What happened<br />
with The William<br />
Swanston Charitable<br />
Fund, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Community</strong><br />
<strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Mahoning</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> and The Raymond<br />
John Wean <strong>Foundation</strong> is an example<br />
<strong>of</strong> collaboration and merger at<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir finest. The organizations and<br />
individuals involved abandoned <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
own self interests, modified <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
cultures to allow group decisionmaking<br />
and vigorously pursued an<br />
agenda designed to bring positive<br />
change for children and youth in<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>Mahoning</strong> <strong>Valley</strong>. Specifically,<br />
we are targeting children with<br />
lagging academic performance.<br />
We understand that <strong>the</strong>re are <strong>of</strong>ten<br />
root causes for this poor academic<br />
performance and our efforts will focus<br />
on an attempt to address some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
underlying causes.”<br />
