bro<strong>the</strong>rs are envious of him, or that people sometimes retaliate for injuries done to <strong>the</strong>m. (They<br />

may also, equally fallaciously, believe that it gains support from <strong>the</strong> existence of mirror neurons.)<br />

Such phenomena, however, are irrelevant. Girard’s style—his repeated use of <strong>the</strong> word “mimesis”<br />

in a variety of different contexts—cunningly invites <strong>the</strong> inattentive reader to conflate <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

<strong>and</strong> many inattentive readers have gleefully accepted his invitation. That is no reason for us,<br />

however, to follow suit.<br />

All in all, <strong>the</strong>n: <strong>the</strong> Girardian <strong>the</strong>ory is not true; it does not make us better readers; <strong>and</strong> it’s<br />

not an exaggeration of anything important. Like <strong>the</strong> “everything is water” claim attributed to<br />

Thales, <strong>the</strong> “all desire is mimetic,” “all violence is mimetic,” <strong>and</strong> “all culture comes from violence”<br />

claims reduce, at best, to something true but trivial. And while Girardianism may well be “generative,”<br />

it is surely no more so than Scientology. Yet <strong>the</strong>re it is, still going strong at a literature<br />

department near you. I’m not sure how we can stop it. Maybe an advertising campaign? Involving<br />

Cindy Crawford <strong>and</strong> Penélope Cruz? Maybe I could just hang around <strong>the</strong> Imitatio foundation<br />

<strong>and</strong> wait until everyone has mimetically adopted my desire not to have to listen to people<br />

saying all <strong>the</strong>se outl<strong>and</strong>ish things? If only desire worked <strong>the</strong> way <strong>the</strong>y say it does . . .<br />

1:45 p.m. <strong>and</strong> see that several cars are parked on my street without tickets, I take this as a sign that <strong>the</strong> parking<br />

enforcement officer has already been <strong>and</strong> gone, <strong>and</strong> I will park my car. In such cases I am following <strong>the</strong> example of <strong>the</strong><br />

drivers before me, without for all that borrowing <strong>the</strong>ir desire. (I am grateful to Lee Konstantinou for this example.)
