Training/Certification Program in Root Cause Analysis for Plant Equipment
Reliability Applications

Abstract: A significant gap often exists between attending a training session and the application of knowledge
learned during that session. To bridge this gap on a specific Root Cause Analysis (RCA) training for plant equipment
reliability applications, a 3-part pilot certification program was deployed and successfully completed. The objective
of the RCA certification program is to provide the Organization with a sufficient number of qualified RCA practitioners
who can effectively solve chronic/repetitive problems relating to plant equipment reliability using a systematic/
structured approach of RCA. Nine out of initially thirteen participants have successfully completed the certification
requirements. The tangible outcome of the pilot is estimated to be very significant cost avoidance since real case
problems are hopefully resolved during the course of the pilot. This presentation discusses some details of the piloted
certification program, the lessons learnt, and some collaboration efforts with local Academia to customize the
required software for a better fit to plant equipment reliability applications.
Biography
Dr. Salman T. Al-Mishari is a practicing Reliability Specialist at Saudi Aramco and also a part time faculty member at
KFUPM. He has 23 years of postgraduate experience in rotating equipment, reliability and vibration. Dr. Salman is
a certified reliability and maintenance professional (CMRP) and also holds a black-belt certification in Six Sigma. He
received his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alabama, USA, his M.S. degree in Engineering
Management from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), Saudi Arabia, and his Ph.D. in
Plant Equipment Reliability from the University of Bahrain, Bahrain.
