INTRODUCTION<br />

The idea and general axis of this work which have guided <strong>François</strong><br />

DURET in 1972, during the invention then the redaction of his first<br />

technical specifications on the optical impression or dental prosthesis<br />

CAD/CAM (computer assisted design and manufacturing) are rather<br />

simple. Even if the realisation and application have created numerous<br />

practical problems which have then led to devices more and more<br />

sophisticated and removed from the initial conception, the philosophy<br />

is still the same, that is to say lead towards a realisation of prostheses<br />

more and more scientific and technological. It took no less than 10<br />

years for the first device to be “born” and it is still far from the final<br />

realisation (Fig.1).<br />

A non ionising ray emitter projects a light ray, coherent or not, which<br />

will code the analysed tooth.<br />
