34 | Cineplex Magazine | april 2012 the hunter Hits tHeatres april 13 tH Willem Dafoe On On what was most interesting about making The Hunter, in which he plays a mercenary sent to Tasmania to hunt a rare tiger. “Tasmania, as you can see from the movie, is quite a specific landscape and shooting with quite a tight crew in the wilderness a lot of the time was interesting. I can’t think of too many movies where it was just me and the crew for long periods of time. I wasn’t performing with other actors, it was just me doing things in the wilderness and that was fun.” On his character. “It’s an expansive character in that he goes through a transformation…. I’m always very fond of very laconic, cut-off characters that have a rich inner life, and you have to restrain that.” On the fact that he looks better in real life than in most movies. “I’ve heard that before and I think, ‘Oh I must be doing something wrong.’ I think I play intense characters sometimes and I have a very flexible face. I also work in a lot of low-budget movies where they don’t have a chance to light very well and you’re shooting on the run. It’s not like a Hollywood movie where they light everything to death, and they control the looks of things. So maybe that’s the reason.” On whether he feels he’s typecast as a bad guy. “There’s a funny perception that I play bad guys, but if you really know my movies, the big and small ones, the truth is, often I play good guys. But they’re good guys that are flawed, good guys who are outside of society. They’re odd or they’re criminals, but morally they tend to function as good people. I’m not interested in [romantic comedies]. I like movies that make you think. I like to laugh and I’ve done some comedies, but I think what I’m most attracted to is movies that push us and shock us a little bit.” On whether he likes doing interviews. “I think I do, but then afterwards I think, ‘Oh my God, I hated that.’ The truth is, I love making things, and I feel like it is a part of my job, particularly for movies that need press, it helps. And I’m social enough that I like talking to people and meeting people and sometimes we talk about things that interest me, and things I like to talk about and think aloud about. But I’m still confused, after all these years, about what to share.” On what he’d do if he wasn’t an actor. “I like doing things with my hands. I like being outdoors.
