Although most members of <strong>the</strong> church were impoverished African peasants, Bryant<br />

had also organized many successful ti<strong>the</strong>s-pay<strong>in</strong>g white congregations on <strong>the</strong> R<strong>and</strong>,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Krugersdorp, which was called ‘one of <strong>the</strong> most profitable centers’ <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> entire<br />

church. 54 Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> period from 1904 on Bryant’s region reported far more baptisms<br />

than any o<strong>the</strong>r section of <strong>the</strong> church, <strong>and</strong> was clearly <strong>the</strong> most successful. 55 Follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Dowie’s demise, Bryant had emerged as a m<strong>in</strong>or contender to <strong>the</strong> Zionist leadership, but<br />

was eclipsed by his hated rival W. G. Voliva. This defeat prompted Bryant to pull his<br />

South African congregations out of <strong>the</strong> Zionist church. 56 But ra<strong>the</strong>r than rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

South Africa, Bryant decided to relocate to California. As a result an exist<strong>in</strong>g, profitable,<br />

leaderless organization was thus ripe for <strong>the</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Lake <strong>and</strong> Bryant had had significant deal<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> past as mid-level officials <strong>in</strong> Dowie’s<br />

church, 57 so it is likely that <strong>the</strong> two orchestrated a h<strong>and</strong>-over. In any case, Lake clearly<br />

corresponded with various people prior to his arrival <strong>in</strong> South Africa, <strong>and</strong> his family<br />

was given a house to live <strong>in</strong> rent-free on <strong>the</strong> day of his arrival. He <strong>and</strong> Hezmalhalch<br />

also seamlessly took control over Bryant’s former members, brought <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

newly-formed AFM <strong>in</strong> May, <strong>and</strong> were f<strong>in</strong>ancially supported by <strong>the</strong>m from <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Everyth<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>ts to a carefully-orchestrated move to South Africa, ra<strong>the</strong>r than an<br />

impulsive, div<strong>in</strong>ely-<strong>in</strong>spired one. 58<br />

SOME SOUTH AFRICAN RELIGIOUS SCAMS<br />

‘The <strong>Devil</strong> <strong>Who</strong> Heals’<br />

Lake <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> early AFM leadership utilized a whole host of forms of religious fraud to<br />

attract ti<strong>the</strong>s-pay<strong>in</strong>g members to <strong>the</strong>ir church.<br />

It would appear that Lake learned two of <strong>the</strong>se methods directly from Dowie himself,<br />

as he <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r members of his family were engaged to perform <strong>the</strong>m. On <strong>the</strong> one h<strong>and</strong>,<br />

Sault Ste Marie, Michigan <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> late 1890s. Bryant visited on numerous occasions to preach<br />

<strong>and</strong> engage <strong>in</strong> faith heal<strong>in</strong>gs. The most notable <strong>in</strong>stance of this occurred <strong>in</strong> August 1900, when<br />

Lake’s wife Jenny was accidentally shot <strong>and</strong> fell <strong>in</strong>to critical condition as Lake refused to<br />

let her receive medical attention. In <strong>the</strong> face of large mobs <strong>the</strong> two orchestrated a ‘vanish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

bullet miracle’, claim<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> bullet lodged <strong>in</strong> her stomach had disappeared <strong>in</strong> response to<br />

prayer. Mrs. Lake recovered <strong>the</strong>reafter, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> threat of a lynch<strong>in</strong>g was averted. For vary<strong>in</strong>g<br />
