Master of International Agriculture (MIAP) Directorship Responsibilities
1. Serves as the director of the program.
2. Has succeeded in increasing MIAP enrollment from nine in 2008 to sixty students in 2012.
MIAP is currently the second largest masters program in CASNR.
3. Maintains critical working relationships, coordination, and cooperation with departments and
faculty from all CASNR and other Colleges at OSU and outside of OSU.
4. Supervises four MIAP staff members: full-time MIAP graduate coordinator and MIAP
graduate assistants.
5. Chairs the MIAP Curriculum Committee.
6. Has created MIAP focus areas and related course lists. Has initiated the paper work for name
change of the program, as well as creating a Master of Science degree in international
agriculture program.
7. Creates and submits the assessment plan for the program, and any other documentation
required by the University for Program Assessment.
8. Overseas the MIAP-Peace Corps option that was developed under her supervision during the
fall of 2010.
9. Overseas the MIAP – dual degree option with the University of Puebla in Mexico and is
creating new dual degree programs.
10. Maintains a current e-mail list and student directory.
11. Writes funding proposals to facilitate Masters of Intl Ag internships.
12. Teaches the Seminars and the internship course for MIAP students.
13. Coordinates the guest speaker series related to OSU’s international activities.
14. Conducts recruitment activities by speaking in classes at OSU and in other institutions and
participation in career and graduate college fairs.
15. Oversees the development of recruitment material and program information.
16. Works with prospective students.
17. Processes the admission, plans of study, and graduation paper work.
18. Serves as the major advisor for MIAP students.
19. Compiles and keeps updated a list of on-site and online offered courses for the upcoming
semesters that are approved for the MIAP students’ POS.
20. Meets with students regularly and answers questions that come through e-mail, phone, or
face-to-face visits.
21. Sends regular notifications regarding OSU courses, graduation requirements, RCR training,
and visiting guest speakers.
22. Advises students on locating funding opportunities. MIAP has no funding for its students and
therefore students seek advice on how to acquire assistantships from other
programs/departments. Several students have located assistantships.
23. Develops Sustainable Internships. Organizes international and domestic internships,
supervises students’ internship work, and sets standards for internship credits. MIAP
American students are required to do an international internship, and international students
often want to do an internship in the U.S. Shida has organized internship opportunities for
students in Argentina, Costa Rica, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Thailand. Also
