THE INSTITUTE OF TRADE MARK ATTORNEYS
This booklet lists the Honorary Members, Fellows and Ordinary Members, Affiliate, Associate
and Overseas Members of the Institute.
Qualified & Practising Categories of Membership:
Fellows are persons who before election to Fellowship, were Ordinary Members for at least five years,
and who, in the opinion of the Council, have contributed significantly to any of the objects set out in the
Institute's memorandum.
Ordinary Members are persons acting as Trade Mark Attorneys or Trade Mark Agents who have
been admitted to membership by either:
a) Passing the Institute's qualifying examinations (now the examination for entry on the
Register of Trade Mark Agents)
or
b) Having gained some other recognised qualification in Intellectual Property and completing a
declaration as to the extent of their experience in trade marks.
In either case, that person must have been practising as a Trade Mark Attorney or as a Trade Mark
Agent for at least two years immediately preceding his application.
The names of Fellows and Ordinary Members are consolidated in a single list for convenience.
Other Categories
Honorary Members are those members who, no longer practise and who in the opinion of the
Council have rendered outstanding services in promoting the objects of the Institute.
Affiliate Members are those who have passed the foundation parts of the examination or have
undertaken an equivalent course for entry on the Register of Trade Mark Agents.
Associate Members do not practise as Trade Mark Attorneys or as Trade Mark Agents but have a
special interest in trade marks and have been sponsored by two corporate members.
Overseas Members are persons practising as or engaged in the profession or work of a trade mark
agent outside the United Kingdom and who have been sponsored by two corporate members.
Fellows, Ordinary Members and Corporate Honorary Members are Corporate Members having voting
rights and the right to take part in the management of the Institute's affairs. All candidates for
membership must satisfy the special regulations contained in the articles of association of the Institute
as to the qualification of the candidate for each class of membership, and any rules made by Council.
Council must be satisfied that the candidate is of good character and repute - has adequate
educational attainments and generally is in all respects a suitable person to be admitted to
membership.
