THE INSTITUTE OF TRADE MARK ATTORNEYS<br />
This booklet lists the full membership <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong>, under the membership categories below.<br />
Qualified & Practising Categories <strong>of</strong> <strong>Membership</strong>:<br />
Fellows are persons who before election to Fellowship, were Ordinary Members for at least five years, and<br />
who, in the opinion <strong>of</strong> the Council, have contributed significantly to any <strong>of</strong> the objects set out in the <strong>Institute</strong>'s<br />
memorandum.<br />
Ordinary Members are persons acting as <strong>Trade</strong> <strong>Mark</strong> <strong>Attorneys</strong> or <strong>Trade</strong> <strong>Mark</strong> Agents who have been<br />
admitted to membership by either:<br />
a) Passing the <strong>Institute</strong>'s qualifying examinations (now the examination for entry on the<br />
Register <strong>of</strong> <strong>Trade</strong> <strong>Mark</strong> <strong>Attorneys</strong>)<br />
Or<br />
b) Having gained some other recognised qualification in Intellectual Property and completing a declaration as<br />
to the extent <strong>of</strong> their experience in trade marks.<br />
In either case, that person must have been practising as a <strong>Trade</strong> <strong>Mark</strong> Attorney or as a <strong>Trade</strong> <strong>Mark</strong> Agent for at<br />
least two years immediately preceding his application.<br />
Allied Members are barristers or solicitors qualified in the United Kingdom and are engaged in practice as a<br />
<strong>Trade</strong> <strong>Mark</strong> Attorney or as a <strong>Trade</strong> <strong>Mark</strong> Agent, or otherwise engaged in trade mark agency work and has not<br />
less than two years’ full-time practice in the field <strong>of</strong> Intellectual Property.<br />
Other Categories<br />
Honorary Members are those members who no longer practise and who in the opinion <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Council have rendered outstanding services in promoting the objects <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong>.<br />
Retired Members are those members who are no longer on the Register <strong>of</strong> <strong>Trade</strong> <strong>Mark</strong> <strong>Attorneys</strong> and no<br />
longer practise but still have an interest in the pr<strong>of</strong>ession and work <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong>.<br />
Affiliate Members are those who have passed the foundation parts <strong>of</strong> the Joint Examination Board<br />
examination system.<br />
Student Members are persons wanting to become a qualified trade mark attorney, have not passed any trade<br />
mark exams and who have been sponsored by one corporate member.<br />
Overseas Members are persons practising as or engaged in the pr<strong>of</strong>ession or work <strong>of</strong> a trade mark agent<br />
outside the United Kingdom and who have been sponsored by two corporate members.<br />
Associate Members do not practise as <strong>Trade</strong> <strong>Mark</strong> <strong>Attorneys</strong> or as <strong>Trade</strong> <strong>Mark</strong> Agents but have a special<br />
interest in trade marks and have been sponsored by two corporate members.<br />
Administrator Members have passed the <strong>Trade</strong> <strong>Mark</strong> Administrators qualification examinations <strong>of</strong> the<br />
<strong>Institute</strong>.<br />
