ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
Designers work within many different confines when designing a show.
• Where is the production physically taking place, what is the stage / venue like?
• Where does the show take place: in a house, an office, a school, the forest, multiple locations,
etc.
• When does the show take place: what time period – 1800’s, 1914, 2013, 2045, etc.; what time of
year is it (does this change during the show)? What time of day is it (does this change during the
show)?
• What is the mood of the show? (Is it a comedy, a tragedy, is it serious or light? Is it a controversial
topic?)
• Who is the show for; adult audiences, youth audiences, both etc.?
• How much money can the designer spend creating their design? What is their budget? What
needs to be purchased, built, repurposed, etc.?
• How long do they have to design and create their design so that it is ready and safe for the
actors?
• What is the director’s concept for the show & how does that affect the designer?
• If the show is a co-production (being done in multiple venues).
• For a touring show, designers must make sure that everything will fit – easily – into the van
transporting their designs (along with the actors and stage manager); and that these elements
can be constructed and deconstructed quickly; as well as making sure that the pieces are durable.
