GENERAL SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT
POLICE OFFICERS MURDERED WHILE IN
DISCHARGE OF DUTY
1923
Patrolman Blanton W. Sutton (colored) of District 2-A,
was, at 10:20 P. M., June 4, 1923. fatally shot in a poolroom at
60 W. 37th St., by Ernest Jackson (colored) when he attempted
to search the latter for concealed weapons. Jackson also was
shot to death by Patrolman Sutton.
Patrolman Vincent J . Spiro, of the Motorcycle Division,
was, at 10 :30 P. M., July 1, 1923, fatally injured at 84th St. and
Ashland Ave., while pursuing a speeding automobile which either
struck or crowded him, causing him to collide with the side of a
street car. The automobile and occupants were not identified.
Patrolman Spiro died from his injuries on July 9, 1923.
Patrolman Lawrence C. Harnett, of the 16th District, was,
at 2:55 P. M ., October 27, 1923, shot and instantly killed in the
passageway of 914 W. Polk St., by Joseph Montana, Jr. Patrolman
Harnett accompanied Sergeant Stephen Barry and Patrolman
F. Fuerst in a raid on the premises to investigate the alleged
existence of a moonshine plant. Sergeant Barry was wounded.
The November Grand Jury indicted Joseph Montana, Jr., together
with Joseph Montana, Sr., John Montana, Madelina
Montana and Rosena Montana, all of whom had taken part in
resisting the raid. The case is now pending in the Criminal
Court.
