GENERAL SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT<br />
POLICE OFFICERS MURDERED WHILE IN<br />
DISCHARGE OF DUTY<br />
<strong>1923</strong><br />
Patrolman Blanton W. Sutton (colored) of District 2-A,<br />
was, at 10:20 P. M., June 4, <strong>1923</strong>. fatally shot in a poolroom at<br />
60 W. 37th St., by Ernest Jackson (colored) when he attempted<br />
to search the latter for concealed weapons. Jackson also was<br />
shot to death by Patrolman Sutton.<br />
Patrolman Vincent J . Spiro, of the Motorcycle Division,<br />
was, at 10 :30 P. M., July 1, <strong>1923</strong>, fatally injured at 84th St. and<br />
Ashland Ave., while pursuing a speeding automobile which either<br />
struck or crowded him, causing him to collide with the side of a<br />
street car. The automobile and occupants were not identified.<br />
Patrolman Spiro died from his injuries on July 9, <strong>1923</strong>.<br />
Patrolman Lawrence C. Harnett, of the 16th District, was,<br />
at 2:55 P. M ., October 27, <strong>1923</strong>, shot and instantly killed in the<br />
passageway of 914 W. Polk St., by Joseph Montana, Jr. Patrolman<br />
Harnett ac<strong>com</strong>panied Sergeant Stephen Barry and Patrolman<br />
F. Fuerst in a raid on the premises to investigate the alleged<br />
existence of a moonshine plant. Sergeant Barry was wounded.<br />
The November Grand Jury indicted Joseph Montana, Jr., together<br />
with Joseph Montana, Sr., John Montana, Madelina<br />
Montana and Rosena Montana, all of whom had taken part in<br />
resisting the raid. The case is now pending in the Criminal<br />
Court.<br />
