Fired either with sentiment or the wish to mark the momentous occasion or the desire to point with glee to the fact that they'll never have to produce another issue of the sheet, they are writing farewell editorials or "swan song" columns. At least one such editor in a Southwestern school has written a "30" editorial, advising his successor to "hold high the torch of journalism which has been burning here so long." With us it's like this: there's been nothing burning around here (except cigarettes and the business manager's cigar) since last year when Mr. Urbanorsky's prize manure on campus had the office along with all other Tech rooms, filled with flies, and we tried waving burning newspapers to reduce the insect population a bit. All we mean by this is that next year's editor will have light his own fires. We choose to finish up, fittingly we think, with some few words of thanks to the staff of The Toreador. The abovementioned business manager, Charles Maple, not only kept the finances in order but also found time to cover military science and agriculture news for us. Sports Editors B. F. Kellum and Kenneth Bennett had the opportunity to write about Tech's great year—perhaps its greatest —in sports, Phyllis Martin, Gale Hays and Pat Harkleroad had a similar opportunity. since this v. -as the Year One for Tech's national Greeks, who consistently made news for the society eidtors. Our reporters, during the -second semester were: Lad oy e e Lambert, whose major task was reporting the actions of the Student Council and other governing groups; Jan Webster, who wrote about such women's organizations as AWS, Barbara Knott, -.rho kept you informed abbout drama and other speech department activities; Hubert Wadill, who turned out hundreds of words on Artists Course programs and musical events; Virginia Presley. who kept watch on architecture, art and Museum happenings; Ann Rae Lee, who was assigned to news of publications and the natural science departments; Kenneth McAnear, who handled religious news; John Hugh Smith, who was concerned with the activities of the administration of the college; Quatha Power, who kept you posted on Home Ec news; and Shirley Hammer, who took care of Business Administration and social sciences. Street-test it! Hill-test it! New KTTC Transmitter May Be In Operation By Next Semester A new KTTC transmitter is expected to be in operation next year. "It is not expected to be finished by the end of this year, but it should be ready next year," said W. F. Halvorson, advisor for KTTC. Senior members of the American Institute of Electrical Engineering are working on the project. The new transmitter is expected to improve reception in the dormitories and the new signal is expected to be stronger. More interest is expected to be created in the station when the students realize there is a KTTC, according to Halvorson. Prof. Harold A. Spuhler has advised the students in their work. Richard Merington, senior engineer tram Orange, drew up the plans for the new transmitter and will continue to work on the project this summer. Students that have worked on the project and will graduate this month are: Joe Crank, Billie Joe Hood, W. G. Breckenridge, Paul Griffith and Jim Snethen. Three Texas Tech officials who are scheduled to deliver commencement addresses to graduating senior classes are Dr. E. N. Jones, president; James G. Allen, dean of Student life; and Dr. Doyle W. Jackson, professor of education. Dr. Jones will speak at Gallup, N. M., May 27. Dean Allen will speak at Quanah, May 28. Dr. Jackson will speak at Smyer, May 24. Second round results were: Tyre defeated Don McGuire, 5-5; Allen Lehman won over Hunter by forfeit; Hull defeated Roy Anderson 3-2; and Jim Gaede defeated Billy Smyers 4-2. Tyre defeated Lehman 2-1 to earn a place in the finals. Hull won the opposing slot by defeating Gaede, 5-4. Dr. Marvin S. Vance, pastor of the First Methodist Church, Austin, will deliver the baccalaureate sermon on May 30 in Jones Stadium. Dr. Vance has been in the ministry for 23 years. He received a doctor of divinity degree from Southwestern Universi ty. Dr. Vance has been especially popular as a speaker for professional and civic groups. Dr. Ernest C. Colwell, dean of the faculties of Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., will deliver the commencement speech at Tech on May 31. Dr. Colwell has a distinguished record as an educator. He now is acting director of the new Graduate Institute of the Liberal Arts at Emory, from which he holds two degrees. Dr. Colwell holds three honorary degrees: a doctor of literature from Emory, a doctor of sacred theology from Harvard and a doctor of laws from Colby College. Both the commencement exercises and baccalaureate sermon are set for 8 p.m. Rehearsal for the graduating class will be in Jones Stadium at 8:30 am. May 30. The class will attend the Magnolia Places Scholarship Here Texas Tech has been selected as one of seventeen colleges and universities in the nation at which a Magnolia Petroleum Co. scholarship for the school year 1954-55 will be placed. The scholarship at Tech,„sponsored by Magnolia's. Geophysical Department, follows a policy of the company to encourage, assist acid recognize outstanding students in the fields .related to petroleum engineering, geophysics and geology. This will be the third year that Teel has participated in the scholarships. Any student in the field of geophysics entering his senior year next fall is eligible for this grant, and the recipient will 'be selected joihtly by Tech dad the Magnolia company. A $750 scholarship will be Paid to the student in accordance with established scholarships policies of Tech, Acceptance of the grant does not obligate the student to work for Magnolia or for the company to employ him atter his graduation. Besides Tech, Magnolia scholarships in geophysics will be offered at Kansas State, Rice Institute, Colorado School of Mines, Missouri School of Mines, and Georgia Institute of Technology. Petroleum engineering scholarships have been established at Louisiana State, University of Kansas, University of Texas, Rice Institute, University of Oklahoma, and Texas A&M College. Scholarships in geology have been placed at Michigan State, University of Nebraska, Miami University of Ohio, Iowa State, University of Wyoming, and Southern Methodist University. Final Job Interviews Set for Techsans on Monday, Tuesday Two organizations have scheduled interviews for Monday and Tuesday in the closing recruiting period of this semester, according to Mrs. Jean Jenkins, Placement Service director. The Board of U. S. Civil Service Examiners, Internal Revenue Service,. will interview accounting majors, Monday. An examination for the position of accountant in a G5-7 rating will be announced. General Mills will conduct interviews Tuesday for seniors for permanent positions including sales, and for juniors for summer positions especially in sales. There are opportunities in advertising in the comptroller's department, and financial, purchasing, sales, industrial relations, mar k et analysis, public relations and traffic operations.
