Primary 4-H members receiving rainbow participation ribbons were Briden Scheibner, Rebecca McTee, Shelby Jones, Naches Valley 4-H Club, Claire Reid, Arizona Rodriguez, Courtney Johnson, Keira Bodine, Malea Esqueda, Kiley Johnson, America’s Future 4-H Club. All clothing project members were recognized for their work in the designed clothing curriculum. The program has been expanded into eight themes – Creativity, Communication of Self, Fabric Knowledge, Clothing Selection, Consumerism, Care, Culture and Career. EXPRESSIVE ARTS CONTEST RESULTS Congratulations to all the 4-H members who participated in the Upper, Central and Lower Valley Expressive Arts Contests (poster contest) in February and March. All blue ribbon posters have gone on to the County Contest. We have some posters here in the Extension office ready to be picked up as soon as possible. Youth who have completed grades 8 th -12 th are eligible. This program will feature fun, action-filled activities, educational workshops, national speakers, college/career information and recreation. Youth will be able to answer the questions they have about their future: education, options, career possibilities and development of life skills. The cost is $125.00 with scholarships available. PROJECT NEWS 4-H FOOD ACTIVITIES The Yakima County 4-H Food Activities will be held June 23, 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm. They will be held at the Sunnyside High School, Room 202 located at the corner of 16 th & Edison in Sunnyside. These activities are not only a great way for 4-H’ers to demonstrate knowledge and skills they have learned, but also the way to select the participants for the Washington State 4-H Fair in Puyallup in September. As a Food Project Leader, would you please share this information with your 4-H’ers. Register your 4-H’ers who want to participate by June 3. Obtain copies of the guidelines and worksheets as needed for your 4-H’ers. Each food activity has a worksheet to be filled out in advance and presented to the judge when they arrive for the activity. ONLINE TRAINING MODULE AVAILABLE - DISEASE PREVENTION IN 4-H LIVESTOCK PROJECT Check out the new online training module for 4-H volunteer leaders! The Disease Prevention Module is one of two modules that are being developed by Veterinary Medicine Extension specifically for 4-H volunteer leaders who work with livestock projects here in Washington State. Online training is a great way to learn about topics that are important for youth livestock programs because it is accessible, interactive, and fun! The first training module, called “Disease Prevention in 4-H Livestock Projects”, teaches volunteer leaders biosecurity practices and how they can be used to reduce the risk of contracting and spreading diseases while raising 4-H livestock. The module is a great way to learn disease prevention and also provides inspiration and teaching ideas so volunteer leaders can bring the concepts of disease prevention to youth in their county. If you have any questions, contact Jill Stevenson at: jstevenson@vetmed.wsu.edu. – Jill Stevenson STATE NEWS 4-H SPONSORSHIP OF OPEN HORSE SHOWS A 4-H Club hosting a horse show either as a schooling show exclusively for 4-H members or for fund raising purposes as an “open” horse show much follow 4-H policies. We insist that the 4-H name and emblem is associated with only the best practices in positive youth development including the health and safety of youth and animals as well as the best developmental opportunities for young people. A 4-H Club can host a horse show exclusively for 4- H’ers, or for “open” youth or for “open” youth and adults. When a club is considering hosting a show they first of all need to determine their goals – in other words why are they interested in hosting the show? Is it to educate and give experience to current 4-H members, or perhaps attract new youth to the 4-H Program, or to raise money to support their 4-H Club efforts or some combinations of these goals. Managing a 4-H schooling show that is an exclusively 4-H environment seldom raises questions. However, sponsoring an open show frequently results in a number of questions. 4-H policies must be Check out our website at http://pan.co.yakima.wa.us/wsuext followed (at a minimum) including: 1. Riders must meet 4-H age criteria – consequently youth who have not reached their 8th birthday and are in the third grade, cannot show in classes with horses. They may participate in non-horse classes like stick-horse etc. 2. All youth riders must wear approved helmets, along with appropriate footwear. 3. They also must follow the 4-H age divisions of junior (3rd-5th); Intermediate (6-8); and Senior (9th -12th) with no cross age competition. 4. Adult classes are allowed in an open show. 5. Hi-point and other cumulative awards not allowed where there is head to head in arena cross-age competition. 6. Refer to the 4-H Horse Contest Guide for additional safety considerations. If 4-H policies are not followed for open horse shows, 4-H liability coverage, labor and industries coverage for volunteer injuries and American Income Life Accident Insurance will not be in force because an open show not in compliance of 4-H standards would not be considered a 4-H event. Therefore, 4-H has no oversight of these non-compliant open activities. Additionally, a 4-H club cannot manage the monies in support of a non-compliant open show nor use the non-profit 501(C)3 tax exempt status that 4-H enjoys. This is because the 4-H Club account has been created for the express purpose of supporting 4-H programming, therefore, cannot be used to manage funds from an open horse show that is not in compliance with 4-H policies. July 14-16, 2009 in Jerome, ID, the Southern Idaho Livestock Judging Camp is scheduled to take place. In the past, we have had participants from Nevada, Oregon and Washington attend this event and would like to extend the opportunity to everyone. More information on the web at: http://extension.ag.uidaho.edu/gooding/ – Jerry Newman NEWS YOU CAN USE PROJECT FINANCING AVAILABLE Through its Rural Youth Loan Program, the Farm Service Agency provides financial assistance to youth between the ages of 10 and 20 who want to establish and operate their own modest size income producing project. Each project must be part of an organized and supervised program of work in participation with an established organization, such as 4-H or FFA.
