www.peterson.af.mil Space ObServer Thursday, October 2, 2008 Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) take final flight On 10 September 1942, Nancy Harkness Love, with the support of the U.S. Air Transport Command, organized 25 women pilots into the Women’s Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS). WAFS headquarters were located at New Castle Army Air Base in Delaware. Today an aircrew from Peterson Air Force Base, Colo. will be flying a C-130 over Dallas through the weekend at the final convention for the Women Airforce Service Pilots, the legendary WASPs who delivered aircraft from factories to the front lines and forced open doors for women in the military. The 302nd Airlift Wing aircrew made up of female reservists, a historical first for the unit, volunteered for the final leg of a historical flight by taking the WASPs for their final military airborne journey. The Reserve crew from the 302nd AW will fly WASP in conjunction with a training mission on a 302nd AW C-130 Hercules cargo aircraft out of Dallas Love Field, Texas. This will be a historical flight uniting the WASP pioneers with other female aviators from different generations allowing the original WASP to witness the fruits of their “paving the way” for today’s women aviators. The “last flight” is part of the final reunion for the WASP being held September 25-28, 2008 at the Omni Mandalay Las Colinas Hotel, Irving, Texas. The purpose of this final reunion is to preserve the heritage and promote the history of the WASP. In addition to the WASP and the 302nd AW aircrew, other current and retired women aviators from across the country will gather at the reunion to honor the courage and dedication of the WASP. Discussing the flight, the 302nd Airlift Wing WASP mission C-130 aircraft commander, Major Colleen Cameron said, “I am honored and humbled to fly the WASP mission this weekend. These pioneering women and their love of country, is a lesson for us all — they stepped forward to serve their country when she needed them. Their courage and patriotism has cleared the path for all future female military aviators. “ The WASP were the first women in history trained to fly American military aircraft and paved the way for today’s women aviators to serve. In November of 1977, President Jimmy Carter signed a bill providing veteran’s status to the WASP. Of the 1,800 WASP, who participated in the program during WWII, 300 are still living and about 150 will be in attendance at the reunion. The new front entrance and parking lot represent the completion of the sixth phase in a 12-phase, $10 million renovation project for Bldg 959. The project began in November 2007 and is projected to be complete around April 2009. Each phase of this project allows the 21st MDG to improve upon its services for all beneficiaries. The new front entrance and new parking lot brings the 21st MDG closer to meeting the requirements necessary for today’s standard of care as well as making the building safer for patients and staff members alike. At 5:30 p.m., Sept. 19, members of the 21st AMDS and their families gathered at Peterson’s outdoor track to share the evening together. The evening started with a 25-minute run/walk, followed by relay races. Following the physical training, squadron members gathered inside the Aerospace Physiology Building for food, camaraderie, and face painting for the children. Lt. Col. Jeanine Czech, commander of the 21st AMDS, introduced the idea of family fitness to the squadron and has implemented a Team Aerospace Award for the flight with greatest participation and spirit during the fitness session. The first family fitness session was a success and a blast for all involved. The squadron plans to hold the family sessions twice a year.
