our process

all rookwood pieces are made in our Cincinnati studio using the same techniques (with
some 21st century upgrades) and attention to detail that made rookwood famous over a
century ago.
The rookwood process is a synergy of chemistry and art. our glaze chemists and artists
work in close association together in order to produce works of art that are as innovative
as they are creative. our glazes are developed in house, with a lot of attention dedicated
to experimentation and testing. not only do our proprietary clay formulas use the
finest materials available, but they are also developed by our artists and are unique to
rookwood. from the first inspiration to the final product, the rookwood process centers
on the artistic expertise of our craftsmen, artists and chemists.
our handcrafted process really starts with our design team. They spend a large amount
of their time brainstorming and researching, creating and critiquing. it is of the utmost
importance that all rookwood designs remain true to the rookwood aesthetic. While our
designs lend to a wide-range of styles, the rookwood aesthetic incorporates designs that
allow the breaking and pooling of our glazes to create interesting and beautiful effects
when fired. This creates a truly distinct work of art that only ceramics can achieve.
