KIUC Currents - Kauai Island Utility Cooperative

In this issue, I want to recognize the men and women who make KIUC what
it is today: our employees. KIUC is a viable and reliable utility because of our
professional employees. They are called on to do many tasks that require
different skills—from engineering to financial, technical to clerical and others.
On stormy nights when the lights go out, we have men who are braving
the weather to restore services to our members. These well trained and
skilled employees perform their duties in a professional and safe manner.
Our employees work with our legislators, members of Congress, state
regulators and other government officials. Taking care of members who
walk in or call in is their daily routine. Handling the many tasks, too
numerous to mention, requires a lot of education and training. They
continue to take special training to improve their performance on the job.
Since education and training plays such an important role with our employees and our directors, at
our September board meeting I was honored to recognize the following for completing educational
courses in their respective area of work.
The Management Internship Program, which addresses technical, business and leadership skills
required of cooperative CEOs and managers: Randall Alcott, Safety Coordinator and Ferdinand Pascual,
Distribution Planning Coordinator.
Management Essentials Certificate, a combination of classroom and online learning for mid­level and
senior managers to become more effective managers: Randall Alcott, Shelley Paik, Steven Rymsha and
Kathryn Williams.
Directors who completed the Board Leadership Certificate Program that offers advanced issue and
skill­based courses for Directors, were: Carol Bain and yours truly, T P Tacbian.
The Credential Cooperative Director Program (CCD), which provides the basic knowledge and skill
required of cooperative directors, was completed by: Jan Tenbruggencate.
Our goal is for our board of directors and staff to work together to complete the tasks set forth in our
Strategic Plan, which is for the benefit of you, our members.
