KIUC issued 385 rebates at $250 per rebate. The program will result in annual energy savings of 40,425 kilowatthours and life cycle savings of 485,100 kWh in 12 years. With today’s rates at 37 cents a kWh, that amounts to $14,957 annual savings and $179,487 over 12 years. Kaua‘i’s greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced annually by 72,795 pounds of carbon dioxide, with a life cycle reduction of 873,543 pounds of CO 2 . Kaua‘i’s oil dependence also will be reduced by 2,746 barrels of No. 2 diesel per year and 32,958 barrels in 12 years.
Photo by Shelley Paik KIUC board and staff joined Kealia community members on February 23 for an informal talk at the Kealia Landing Lookout in the Kamole culdesac. Project engineer Caroline Tremblay and board member Steve Rapozo updated attendees on the plan to reconfigure the lines in the Kealia Beach corridor. The power lines in that area have been identified as having a high potential to harm protected and endangered seabirds. In 2007, KIUC reconfigured the line to address the seabird issue. To comply with the U.S. Department of Justice settlement, KIUC must modify and reconfigure certain areas of the Kealia Beach corridor to reduce the incidence of seabird takes and to comply with commitments made in KIUC’s ShortTerm Habitat Conservation Plan. KIUC is proposing a twophase project scope: Phase 1 from Kawaihau Road to Ka‘ao Road, and Phase 2 from Mailihuna Road to Ka‘ao Road. COOPERATIVE TECHNOLOGY Community Outreach Kealia Beach Corridor Reconfiguration Project In Phase 1, the existing 69kV line will be reframed to a birdfriendly configuration and the existing 12kV circuit will be reframed to a flat construction. This will reduce the layers of wires from nine to five. The poles will be cut about five to eight feet. Construction is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2011. In Phase 2, distribution and communication lines will be undergrounded to allow the 69kV lines to remain at or below treetop level to minimize the potential for bird collisions. The poles will be about 40 feet compared with the existing 60foot poles. There will be three layers of horizontal wires, instead of the original nine layers. Construction is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2012. KIUC is coordinating with Hawaiian Telcom, Oceanic Time Warner Cable and Sandwich Isles on underground design of the communications lines. The coop is working hard to make sure it keeps members informed when crews will be working along Kuhio Highway from the end of Kapa‘a Town to Kealia Heights. APRIL 2011 11
