DREAMING IN TECHNICOLOUR Armbro Scribe was O’Reilly’s firstever purchase at a yearling auction. He cost $3,200. “I was training his sister, Armbro Piranha, for John and Jim Fielding; she’d cost $70,000, and I liked her. I figured he had to be worth the money. By the time we sold him at Harrisburg at three, he’d got us just over $300,000.” He was the first in a series of productive OSS performers for O’Reilly. “We seemed to always have one good one a year,” he said, mentioning the likes of Caught My Eye, Armbro Amaze, Summertimedreams, Very Violet, Cumin First, and Warrawee June (who was second to Lantern Kronos in the $588,705 Elegantimage final at Mohawk in 2008). Not many can compete. I had to consult a program before saying yes. “Now I’m just grateful I got him. He’s a great-looking horse. He wouldn’t be the horse he is today otherwise.” After joining the O’Reilly string, Slave Dream had back-to-back wins at Mohawk in 1:53.2, then finished a rallying second to Ziegler Hanover in the $161,570 Frank Ryan Trot at Rideau Carleton. He finished out the year in the open class at Woodbine and Mohawk and wound up his fouryear-old campaign with nine wins and 22 top-three finishes in 27 starts, good for $244,992. O’Reilly said the horse is a heavyweight and that’s the way he approached this season. “I mapped out his schedule this year like a prizefighter. The trouble with good horses is that they’ve got to race against good horses. When you’ve made $250,000, there are no easy fights, so you try to pick your spots.” Slave Dream didn’t start his season until June. After three winless appearances in the open class at Mohawk, he was entered in the elimination of the Maple Leaf Trot, finishing seventh. In the $772,000 final, however, he closed with a flourish at odds of 47-1 for regular driver Sylvain Filion and appeared destined for second money behind record-setter San Pail until a skip at the wire meant a lapped-on break and relegation to third behind Reven Damour. O’Reilly said the skip probably was due to a foot bruise suffered the night before when the horse got loose on the Mohawk backstretch. He wasn't 100 per cent that night, he said. After the Maple Leaf Trot, it was on to the Nat Ray at The Meadowlands, where Slave Dream was reunited with John Campbell, which whom he won the Hiram Woodruff final in 2009. “The owners made the call (on John),” O’Reilly said. “ I think Sylvain knows him better but they remembered the Woodruff, they wanted John and they pay the bills. I called John myself and said ‘you’ll want to drive this horse’. I really felt he’d win.” O’Reilly wanted to win one of harness racing’s premier events in the worst way. And that pretty much describes Slave Dream’s trip in the Nat Ray.
