HERMES Makes It Number 13 for<br />
Inside <strong>Lehman</strong> Productions<br />
Inside <strong>Lehman</strong> has won a Gold HERMES Creative Award from the<br />
Association of Market<strong>in</strong>g and Communication Professionals, an<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternational organization consist<strong>in</strong>g of several thousand market<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
communication, advertis<strong>in</strong>g, public relations, media production, and<br />
freelance professionals. The awards recognize outstand<strong>in</strong>g work <strong>in</strong><br />
the <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />
This is the thirteenth award for Inside <strong>Lehman</strong>, a student-produced<br />
video magaz<strong>in</strong>e that focuses on events, programs, and issues<br />
with<strong>in</strong> and around the <strong>Lehman</strong> community. This particular show<br />
<strong>in</strong>cluded segments on Nobel prize w<strong>in</strong>ner Jody Williams’s visit to<br />
the campus, women’s softball, computer game programm<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />
the theatre program’s production of South Pacific.<br />
FYI: Help<strong>in</strong>g Freshmen Connect to Each<br />
Other and to <strong>Lehman</strong><br />
“I don’t know if everyone would say this, but it was very scary<br />
com<strong>in</strong>g here without know<strong>in</strong>g anyone,” says Nathalie Diaz, <strong>Lehman</strong><br />
Class of 2011. “FYI made it a lot easier to f<strong>in</strong>d people to talk to,<br />
f<strong>in</strong>d advisors, and pick my classes.”<br />
FYI (the Freshman Year Initiative), a comprehensive learn<strong>in</strong>g community<br />
designed for enter<strong>in</strong>g freshmen, is a nationally recognized<br />
program that serves approximately 1,000 students enter<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>Lehman</strong> each year. The program organizes courses <strong>in</strong>to “blocks.”<br />
A s<strong>in</strong>gle set of students will take one of the blocks as a group.<br />
Both Diaz, a graduate of <strong>Lehman</strong> High School <strong>in</strong> the East Bronx,<br />
and Cristal Mart<strong>in</strong>ez, of Saunders Trade and Technical School <strong>in</strong><br />
Yonkers, are now sophomores who shared the same five courses <strong>in</strong><br />
their first semester at <strong>Lehman</strong> and a smaller block of two courses<br />
<strong>in</strong> their second semester.<br />
“There are some real benefits <strong>in</strong> terms of meet<strong>in</strong>g people,” said<br />
Mart<strong>in</strong>ez, who plans to major <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess. “We both felt as though<br />
we fit <strong>in</strong>to the society early on.”<br />

Steven Wyckoff s<strong>in</strong>ce the program’s <strong>in</strong>ception<br />
<strong>in</strong> 1992, FYI provides a year-long <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary<br />
approach to first-year studies. It aims to<br />
<strong>in</strong>crease student retention, promote <strong>in</strong>tellectual<br />
development, and build mean<strong>in</strong>gful connections<br />
between the student and the <strong>College</strong>.<br />
“FYI helps students feel connected to each<br />
other and to the <strong>in</strong>stitution,” expla<strong>in</strong>s Professor<br />
Wyckoff. Both average freshman GPAs and third-semester<br />
retention rates have <strong>in</strong>creased substantially s<strong>in</strong>ce the FYI program<br />
began.<br />
Besides organiz<strong>in</strong>g the students <strong>in</strong>to learn<strong>in</strong>g communities, faculty<br />
members teach<strong>in</strong>g the same block of courses meet regularly<br />
to collaborate on assignments and lesson plans, ensur<strong>in</strong>g that<br />
thematic and conceptual l<strong>in</strong>ks run across the entire freshman curriculum.<br />
The upshot, for students, is greater opportunity to benefit<br />
from both faculty and peers.<br />
Students <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> pre-med, teacher education, and the perform<strong>in</strong>g<br />
arts, as well as majors <strong>in</strong> account<strong>in</strong>g, bus<strong>in</strong>ess adm<strong>in</strong>istration,<br />
nurs<strong>in</strong>g, and psychology may request placement <strong>in</strong> a learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
community targeted to their planned field of study.<br />
<strong>Lehman</strong> Debuts on iTunes U<br />
<strong>Lehman</strong> <strong>in</strong> collaboration with CUNY has launched a series of<br />
podcasts on iTunes U. The project is part of the University’s effort<br />
to embrace new technologies that have the potential<br />
to expand learn<strong>in</strong>g across the campuses and promote<br />
CUNY’s resources. To l<strong>in</strong>k to <strong>Lehman</strong> on iTunes U, visit<br />
