conta<strong>in</strong>ed red w<strong>in</strong>e." <strong>The</strong> father had been killed<br />

by eight <strong>German</strong> artillery officers because he had<br />

no bread <strong>in</strong> the house. <strong>The</strong>y had killed the<br />

mother after she had brought them the w<strong>in</strong>e. A<br />

few m<strong>in</strong>utes later other <strong>German</strong>s broke <strong>in</strong>to the<br />

house, carried off the young man to Charleroi,<br />

and sent him with fifty other Belgian civilians <strong>in</strong><br />

cattle-trucks to Aix-la-Chapelle. Here, after<br />

twelve days, a Bavarian soldier helped him to<br />

escape. When he returned to Couillet he found<br />

that his house had been burnt.<br />

Other <strong>German</strong> troops advanced through<br />

Boignêe^ where they shot a woman <strong>in</strong> a field,<br />

and Pironcham-ps, 21 where they murdered four<br />

civilians, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a man of sixty and a girl of<br />

fifteen. At Gilly they murdered six civilians.<br />

Two women were thrown <strong>in</strong>to a cistern, and a<br />

baker's wife had her jaw shattered by a bullet as<br />

she was stand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> her shop. Twenty-three<br />

civilians were killed at Farciennes on the<br />

Sambre. Three of them were over sixty years<br />

old, three were children—one five months old and<br />

<strong>in</strong> its mother's arms. At Châtelet n a proclamation,<br />
