Phonemes vs. Allophones<br />

Some sound differences are not contrastive—they<br />

are complementary, meaning that native speakers<br />

cannot hear the differences between them <strong>and</strong> they<br />

think <strong>of</strong> them as the same sound like the /p/ in top,<br />

pot, <strong>and</strong> spot.
