it’s Amber!” He jumped off his crate and came around the car to where I stood. If he was still
angry about Dirk, it didn’t show. He hugged me and asked how I’d gotten there. I told him
I’d come with Harley.
“Whoa! You got to ride all the way from Blackfoot on his bike?” The boy turned back
to Harley. “Hey, when do I get a ride?”
“Whenever you want one, guy…,” Harley paused and looked at Felix. “…if your dad
says it’s o.k. and everything. I’ve got an extra helmet. We’ll go easy.”
A ghost of anger brushed across Rhett’s mouth. “How much longer, Dad?”
hard corners that poked me on the ride down. Now I recognized the dark blue cover and the
gold-leaf lettering. It was a Book of Mormon. “I finished reading this today, Brother Preston.
Thanks for lending it to me.”
For an instant, Felix looked as surprised as I felt. “That was quick,” he said. Then he
smiled widely. “What’d you think?”
“I think I’ll get my own copy. Some books you gotta read more than once.”
“In that case,” Felix said, “you can have that book you’re holding. Think of it as an
early birthday present.”
It was Harley’s turn to look surprised, but he put the book back in his jacket. He
thanked Felix and went down to his bike.
back?”
I followed him out of the garage. “What’s going on, Harley?”
“I’m just tryin’ to learn something about you Mormons. Why do you wanna hold me
