TY THE STARTER
Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson stepped into the starting role after the departure of Chauncey Billups,
and he has not disappointed. Lawson started 31 games this season, including each of the past 25.
Overall, Lawson is averaging a solid 11.7 points, 4.7 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.00 steals in 26.3
minutes, but all those numbers have taken substantial jumps when he is in the starting lineup (chart to
right).
Additionally, the Nuggets are 22-9 (.710) with Lawson in the starting lineup compared to 27-22
(.551) in the games he has played but come off the bench. Ty has scored 20-plus points 11 times this
season (nine coming as a starter), including a career-high 37 (10-11 3FG) vs. Minnesota on 4/9 and a
then career-high 28 vs. Oklahoma City on 4/5.
Lawson has also registered the first six 10+ assist games of his career, the first four doubledoubles
of his career and his first two career 20-point/10-assist games, all within his last 25 games
(all starts).
A MODEL OF CONSISTENCY
Over the last four and a half seasons, the Nuggets have been tough to beat…especially tough to beat in consecutive games. With the Lakers’ fourgame
losing streak earlier this season, Denver is now the only team in the NBA to have not suffered a losing streak of 4+ games since the 2006-07
season. Since 2/26/07 to be exact, the Nuggets have played 355 regular season games without losing four in a row. During this stretch, Denver has
dropped three straight games – on 11 separate occasions – but never four straight. As a comparison, the Nuggets have registered 21 winning
streaks of 4+ games during this 355-game stretch, including three streaks of eight wins in a row.
Suffering consecutive defeats has also been rare for the Nuggets at the Pepsi Center in recent years. Since the start of the 2007-08 season,
only twice has Denver dropped back-to-back home games – against Dallas and Philadelphia in 2009-10 (12/27-1/3) and most recently against
Utah and Houston this season (2/4-2/7). That’s a total of 161 regular season home games with only two sets of consecutive losses among them.
Individual teams haven’t had much luck beating the Nuggets in consecutive games lately either. The longest active losing streaks for the
Nuggets against a single NBA opponent are currently a mere three games (Philadelphia) and two games (L.A. Clippers).
MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME
It didn’t take long for forwards Wilson Chandler and Danilo Gallinari to get comfortable with their roles on their new team. In 21 games (19
starts), Chandler averaged 12.5 ppg and 5.0 rebounds on .419 (101-241) in 30.6 minutes per contest. Gallinari averaged 14.7 ppg and 5.4 rpg in
30.9 mpg in his 14 appearances as a Nugget (12 starts). Chandler scored 10+ points in 14 of his 21 games, including 27 at Utah on 4/13, 20 points
and five boards at Orlando on 3/18, 21 points, seven boards and four threes at New Orleans on 3/14 and 20 points, six rebounds and two blocks at
Portland on 2/25. Chandler also rejected a career-high six blocks in the win over San Antonio on 3/23 … After a quiet debut (two points),
Gallinari exploded for 30 points (15-17 FT) and nine rebounds in the overtime loss to the Trail Blazers on 2/25. He then posted 17 points at
Orlando on 3/18 after missing eight straight games, registered 23 points at Miami on 3/19 and scored a team-high 22 at L.A. Lakers on 4/3.
Gallinari’s 30-point performance was actually something extremely rare for the Nuggets. The Rooster became only the third player in team
history to score 30+ in one of his first two games with the Nuggets – including the first to do so since Orlando Woolridge in 1990-91 (37 in his
debut vs. Golden State on 11/2/90). For all you trivia buffs out there, the only other to do so was Walter Davis in his second game with Denver on
11/5/88 at Seattle (33).
While this type of play is nothing new from Chandler and Gallinari, it’s refreshing to see them not miss a beat with their new team. On the
season, Chandler scored 20+ points 22 times, including one 30+ scoring effort. Gallinari recorded 20+ points 18 times this season (30+ twice),
including eight times in his last 24 outings.
A HOMECOURT HAVEN
Nuggets coach George Karl says it again and again to his team: WE MUST WIN OUR HOME
GAMES. With one of the best homecourt advantages in the entire NBA, the Nuggets have been
taking care of business in recent year. Under Karl’s watch, Denver has gone an impressive 201-
65 (.756) at the Pepsi Center. The Nuggets have been especially good at home over the last 92
home games, dating back to 2008-09 (see right).
Denver wrapped up this season with a 33-8 record at home, which is currently the secondbest
home record in the Western Conference. The Nuggets rattled off streaks of 10 straight home
wins on two separate occasions (from 2/10-3/30 and from 11/5-12/14), representing their third
and fourth home winning streaks of at least 10 consecutive games since George Karl took over
the helm midseason in 2004-05.
The best opportunity for the Nuggets to pick up home wins is when their opponents are on the second leg of a back-to-back. Playing in
Denver the night after a game has proven rough on teams in the past, with the famed Mile High elevation and the fact that Denver International
Airport is a mere 24.6 miles away from the nearest team hotel. Fifteen of the Nuggets 41 home games in 2010-11 come against teams on a backto-back
set, with Denver having gone 14-1 in those games. In 2009-10, the Nuggets went 15-3 (.833) at the Pepsi Center against opponents
playing under those circumstances.
