Miss Niswender is the third of 4 children to James and Rose Niswender and currently resides in Luna Pier. Loaned Labor Leaders Assisting Mr. Sweat and Ms. Niswender with the Organized Labor campaigns will be: Laura E. Keehn, Paul Hengy, Linda Schmidt, Jerome Girard, L. William Conner Jr., Wayne Meehean, Julie Smith, Lyn Losek and Brenda Bogoski. L. William Conner Jr., a member of Utility Workers Union of America Local 258 AFL- CIO and works for Consumers Energy as a Lineman. He currently serves on the Executive Board and Community Services committee for Monroe/Lenawee County AFL- CIO Labor Council. Mr. Conner also serves as the president of the Monroe County CIO Social and welfare Association, where he has been instrumental in the creation of the Monroe County Labor History Museum. Mr. Conner has been a long-time volunteer with the United Way. He served six years on their Board of Directors. In 2001, Conner was the recipient of the Walter A. Campbell Community Services Award, presented by the Michigan State AFL-CIO in cooperation with the Michigan Association of United Ways. The award honors examples of United Way volunteers who were active in union leadership and community service. Mr. Conner and his wife, Karen, have two children; B.J. and Elizabeth. They are members of St. Mary’s Church and live in Monroe. Laura E. Keehn, secretary for American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Local 2529 AFL-CIO, will serve as a Loaned Labor Leader for the second time during the upcoming campaign. Mrs. Keehn is a clerk with the Monroe County Clerk’s department. She has been a Monroe County employee for 8 years. In 2009 Ms. Keehn was appointed to serve on the United Way of Monroe County Board of Directors. Mrs. Keehn is a volunteer with Emergency Management, assisting with public information. She also volunteers as a spotter and observer for the National Weather Service. Mrs. Keehn is a past Bedford Public Schools board member, serving as secretary. Mrs. Keehn and her husband, Charles, along with their daughter Hannah live in Samaria. Paul Hengy, with United Auto Workers local 723 AFL-CIO, is employed at Premier Manufacturing Support Services, a partner with the Global Engine Manufacturing 10
Alliance (GEMA). Mr. Hengy currently volunteers with MCOP, a United Way of Monroe County partner agency, and serves as chair on the UAW Community Services Committee. He has previously volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America as a Den Leader and volunteer. Mr. Hengy and his wife, Holly, live in Monroe with their three children, Jacob, Austin and Kalen. Linda Schmidt is a resident of Monroe and has served as Campaign Labor Chair for 2007 and three years as a Loaned Labor Leader and is a volunteer on the United Way’s fund distribution committee. Ms. Schmidt has been with Utility Workers Union of America Local 223 AFL-CIO and DTE for 27 years. She is currently assigned to the fuel supply unit at the Monroe Power Plant. Schmidt has served on the UWUA Local 223 AFL-CIO Community Services Committee and assisted with the plant’s United Way campaign for 21 years. Her peers rewarded her commitment to volunteerism with the Walter A. Campbell Community Service Award. This award is given to an individual who demonstrates a commitment to volunteerism. She is also a graduate of the Union Community Activist Network class, the AFL-CIO Women’s Labor School and the AFL-CIO Black Lake Community Services School. Ms. Schmidt’s organized labor affiliation is well suited to her desire to help the community. She currently serves as AFL-CIO’s representative on the Board of Directors for the Monroe County Opportunity Program. She is also UWUA 223’s delegate to the AFL-CIO, and has served on the committee for the “Get Out the Vote Dinner.” Ms. Schmidt is a volunteer leader for 4-H with the horse and pony program and has worked with that organization for over thirty years. She is a superintendent of the Monroe County Fair Horse and Pony barn. She is a member of the Michigan Quarter Horse Association. She has also volunteered her time to raise funds for the Salvation Army, Coats for Kids, Relay for Life, and the Adopt A Family Program. Ms. Schmidt is married to Don Chamberlin. She has three children, Misti (Dean) Lindemann, Christopher (Chrissy) Schmidt and Jennifer (Brent) Harvell and 6 grandchildren, Jacob, Keith, Ian, Kyle, Gabriel, and Chase. She attends Faith Lutheran Church. Jerome Girard, with Utility Workers Union of America Local 223 AFL-CIO, is employed by DTE Energy at the Fermi 2 Nuclear Power Plant. Mr. Girard is currently serving as Utility Workers Union of America 223 Fermi 2 division Community Service Director. He is a graduate of the Michigan State AFL-CIO Black Lake Community Services School. 11
