The present volume comes out of what was initially a special issue
of the journal Social Text devoted to the work of Raymond Williams,
which some of my colleagues on the journal's collective encouraged
me to put together. Without that encouragement, the present
volume would not exist, at least not with me as its editor. I am
grateful to them for opening a window of opportunity that enabled
me to return to a body of work I had not been engaged with in
quite the same way before. I should also like to thank the students
in my comparative literature seminar at the Graduate School of the
City University of New York, from whose active commitment to
reading and discussing Williams's writings I benefited greatly. More
personal thanks go to Bruce Robbing, who gave me every support
and encouragement right from the beginning of the project; to John
Brenkman and Michael Moriarty, who commented usefully on a
