Probably you never heard <strong>of</strong> rillensteine. Nei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

had <strong>the</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Desert</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong> until this story<br />

came in from a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at Pomona college. But<br />

now we know <strong>the</strong> answer—it is a piece <strong>of</strong> lime-<br />

stone that looks as if <strong>the</strong> worms had been eating<br />

it. As a gem stone, it doesn't rate high—but no selfrespecting<br />

rock garden should be without a rillensteine<br />

specimen—all covered with wurmrillen.<br />

Rainwater carved <strong>the</strong> unusual pattern on this specimen <strong>of</strong> rillensteine from Silver mountain.<br />
