Note from HSDB [366]: The toxic effect of aromatic
hydrocarbons, benzene, toluene, naphthalene, 1methylnaphthalene,
anthracene, 9-methylanthracene,
phenanthrene, on the productivity of various marine
planktonic algae (Dunaliela biocula, Phaeodactylum
tricornutum, and Isochysis galbaya) increased with
increasing number of aromatic rings. The methylated
compounds were most toxic.

In toxicity study of petroleum oils on
postlarvae of brown shrimp, grass shrimp, &
sheepshead minnow, refined oils were more
toxic than crude oils due to presence of
naphthalene & alkylnaphthalene, incl 1methylnaphthalene.
