OCEAN CITY'S OPPORTUNITY IN THE AIR
E hdve the world of aeronautical atudentg that Ocean
City has natural facilities for the developmtnt oi
of the flneit airports on the Atlantic CoaBt, IV has
advantage of being adaptlble both as a land and sou
|e for planes.
When the airport site was acquired by the city, a
ge percentage of the taxpayers resented the saddling
their shoulders of a heavy RtWitlona] tax burden. But
(is may prove that the city moved more wisely than
at of us knew, •
The announcement last week that the state may de-
lop a section of the airport, under state unemployment
fiat funds, as an emergency landing field, means that
eun City may soon appear as an important spot, on
airways map. The field which the state proposes to
jin would be, for the free use of all planes, commercial
privately owned, for at least ten vears.
lean City may 'soon appear as an important spot on
|, more direct transportation to the sources of its sum-
¥r trade. Quite naturally it has, until now, directed its
lention to the railroads . But now a new form of trans-
rtatioii—aerial—knocks at our door, asking only a small
fount of encouragement to begin with.
Passenger-carrying commercial planes and lines are
[implying rapidly. The same is true of privately-owned
ies. With even the nucleus of an airport to offev them,
} will use it, more and more.
How aerial trafflc is growing today is strikingly em-
.sized in an article in the September "Rotarian," from
tieh the following paragraph is culled:
"Today finds air transport of persons, ^ail, and express
• records which would have been Rasped at in Ihe 'peak'
There's no depression on the aerial trafflc lanes crlss-
Icoiiiiiiuo, HISO mis Inertasing business aloft. It looks as If
|\vi. mnst look/up 10 catch better times returning on wines."
Eight "private jobs" visited the undeveloped field at
jtli st, last week end. This is typical of the almost un-
|ticed sky visjtors the resort already enjoys,
Fred M. King,_ banking and mining magnate of
hiulinjf, W. Va,, flew to Atlantic City for a week-end
bit. The Atlmtie City Press comments as follows on
trip, which he has duplicated several times during
|e summer:
Tlie "Air," he said, brings Ihe ocean front within three
Ilinurs of the mountains of West Virginia, The panorama
lunfulilijil by » fliffht from the uplnnils ncross llars'Iand, Penn-
InKwHiHl, (ivBii ihoujth tin: 1 surf ami cool sea air were not
Ithe ri'wuril for the trip. »
, * • *
Otean City admittedly "has everything" to offer the
laker for health, happiness and recreation. The only
ph is speedy transportation for commuters and a safe
Ming field for private fliers. With air tran£jnr4; com-
|nies inducing fares in many cases to a point almof' m
as the railroads', time-saving considered, the resort
I offered a short cut to the fulfillment of its desires.
Newspaper editors who nfe supporting Hooaevelt are
Jnmea B. Bevill, president of the chamber of com-
Mr. Bevill was able to secure these trees at low cost.
