Everybody knows that when outgo exceeds income
aomething has to be done about it. We are in that position
now.
To our home users of gas the increase amount* to 61c
per month or about 2c per day.
& operating expenses and
eciation and taxes* havt gone
lntrei
Since 1945 our gas d
maintenance, exclusive of
up i3%* while revenues during the same
only 49%.
Practically everything that goes into gas service has gone
up In price. Coal is 47% higher than in 194S, Oil used in
the manufacture of ga* is up 64 -, Pipe is about 30% higher,
Taxe* applicable to our gas department, not including federal
income taxes, increased S0% in the past three years, The
company has met its employees' higher cost of living needs
with average increases of 46'i since VJ Day.
The increase in gas rates made by this company in 1S47
and 1948 were the first in more than 25 years. Continued
rites in operating costs have wiped out these increases andp in
fact* the company^ gas department operated at a loss in i#4e.
tomer demand on our gas facilities continues upward.
During the war we were limited, and properly sof in improve*
ments we could make to our gas plants and equipment. Since
194S the company has spent $2,107,000 to expand gas
service. Another $4,051,000 will be required during the
next three years making a total of $6,158,000 for new gas
equipment and improvements made and to be made in a six
year period,
men:, st moderate extra coif*
We cannot go on absorbing higher costs and still render
the kind of gas service to which our customers are entitled.
That's why this company has filed new rates with the New
Jersey Board of UtUH;
r-V
>t*>.
Tha new ratos will enabki the company to carry en itg;
construction program and protect service stani
