was President <strong>of</strong> Academic Board from 2 August 1999 <strong>to</strong> 31 July 2004<br />

and Pro-Chancellor from 23 February <strong>to</strong> 31 July 2004. I am grateful <strong>to</strong><br />

have worked with many members <strong>of</strong> Academic Board and Council as<br />

well as with many other staff and students. I was fortunate <strong>to</strong> work with<br />

two Chancellors (Sir Anthony Mason, John Yu) and three Vice-Chancellors<br />

(John Niland, Rory Hume, Mark Wainwright), as well as with three Deputy<br />

Chancellors, two Pro-Chancellors, six Deputy Vice-Chancellors, seven Pro-<br />

Vice-Chancellors, one Registrar, 28 Deans (give or take) and fi ve Deputy<br />

Presidents <strong>of</strong> the Board.<br />

Academic Board (like <strong>UNSW</strong>) has covered much<br />

ground in the last fi ve years, and has sometimes<br />

covered the same ground many times. In full swing,<br />

Academic Board is a wonderful experience and many<br />

discussions (including those on the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Science<br />

and on the establishment <strong>of</strong> <strong>UNSW</strong> Asia in Singapore)<br />

have seen the representative, collective intellect at its<br />

best. Academic Board discussions can be diffi cult for those who have a low<br />

<strong>to</strong>lerance <strong>of</strong> disagreement or a high desire<br />

for control and command.<br />

The capacity <strong>to</strong> look confi dent when<br />

you have no idea what is happening<br />

is an essential skill for the President<br />

<strong>of</strong> Academic Board. Throughout<br />

my stewardship, I hope Academic<br />

Board was central in providing advice<br />

<strong>to</strong> Council and the Vice-Chancellor,<br />

proactive and effective in contributing<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>University</strong> direction and policy,<br />

and independent and balanced in<br />

its deliberations.<br />

Academic Board must continue <strong>to</strong> contribute<br />

with the au<strong>to</strong>nomy that is essential <strong>to</strong><br />

the academic and social enterprise <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>UNSW</strong>. The exercise <strong>of</strong> this au<strong>to</strong>nomy can<br />

lastword<br />

Five years minus one<br />

Academic Board must<br />

continue <strong>to</strong> contribute with<br />

the au<strong>to</strong>nomy that is essential<br />

<strong>to</strong> the academic and social<br />

enterprise <strong>of</strong> <strong>UNSW</strong><br />

cause discomfort <strong>to</strong> some; one quickly learns that the independence <strong>of</strong> the<br />

President is sometimes its own reward. Of course, along with au<strong>to</strong>nomy and<br />

independence, there is the privilege <strong>of</strong> showing responsibility <strong>to</strong> the <strong>University</strong><br />

as a whole. This involves fi nding the right balance <strong>of</strong> academic freedom and<br />

duty in what one does, and <strong>of</strong> working <strong>to</strong> meet our own needs, the needs <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>University</strong> and the needs <strong>of</strong> society.<br />

The renewal and redirection <strong>of</strong> our <strong>University</strong> must progress with focused<br />

desire and formed action. As I wrote in the Report <strong>of</strong> the Ways and Means Task<br />

Force in July 2000: “as a <strong>University</strong> we need <strong>to</strong> be creative<br />

and enterprising; we need <strong>to</strong> come <strong>to</strong>gether with trust on the<br />

changes we must go through; and, we need <strong>to</strong> do so now.”<br />

This is not easy <strong>to</strong> put in<strong>to</strong> practice and there have been<br />

times when our <strong>University</strong> seems <strong>to</strong> have been as much<br />

in darkness as in daylight. I was always conscious <strong>of</strong> how<br />

diffi cult that has been for many.<br />

It is now time <strong>to</strong> fl y at the edge <strong>of</strong> dawn. It is there that<br />

we will fi nd the excitement <strong>of</strong> leadership, the freshness <strong>of</strong> discovery, and<br />

the satisfaction <strong>of</strong> lasting impression. To fi nd that place we need <strong>to</strong> get<br />

right the balance <strong>of</strong> individual initiative and creativity and <strong>of</strong> institutional<br />

accountability and loyalty; these dimensions do not need <strong>to</strong> be in confl ict.<br />

We will get the balance right through clear principles, transparent processes,<br />

<strong>to</strong>lerance for ambiguity, commitment <strong>to</strong> collegiality and a capacity <strong>to</strong> look<br />

beyond the immediate.<br />

In the close and in the distant future there will be issues <strong>of</strong> great challenge.<br />

I am hopeful that the wise resolution <strong>of</strong> these will come from Council,<br />

Academic Board, and senior management working <strong>to</strong>gether with goodwill<br />

<strong>to</strong> ensure the right mix <strong>of</strong> consultation, consensus building, and decisionmaking<br />

across students, staff and the wider community.<br />

Since its creation in 1988 Academic Board has had fi ve Presidents (Derek<br />

Anderson, Jane Morrison, Jeremy Davis, Robert King, Kevin McConkey),<br />

each <strong>of</strong> which has brought a distinctive style and infl uence <strong>to</strong> this position<br />

<strong>of</strong> delicate power. I wish my successor, Tony Dooley, well. I thank friends<br />

and colleagues for their support. I will not forget the privilege <strong>of</strong> serving this<br />

<strong>University</strong> as President <strong>of</strong> Academic Board for fi ve years minus one day. ■
