Survivors Fund<br />
Survivors Fund, or<br />
SURF, <strong>is</strong> a charity<br />
dedicated to aiding<br />
and ass<strong>is</strong>ting the<br />
survivors <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Rwandan genocide.<br />
Since 1997, SURF has been<br />
supporting survivors to rebuild<br />
their lives and to meet post<br />
genocide challenges. Whether<br />
providing medical care for<br />
women survivors with<br />
Programmes are delivered through<br />
partner organ<strong>is</strong>ations, including<br />
AVEGA, IBUKA, GAERG and<br />
Solace Min<strong>is</strong>tries in Rwanda.<br />
SURF also provides psychological<br />
support to survivors residing in the<br />
UK.<br />
SURF was founded by Mary<br />
Kayitesi Blewitt at the behest<br />
<strong>of</strong> survivors. She herself lost<br />
50 family members during the<br />
genocide in 1994. Her support for<br />
survivors started back in 1995 after<br />
returning to the UK from eight<br />
months working for the Min<strong>is</strong>try <strong>of</strong><br />
Rehabilitation in Rwanda.<br />

HIV and AIDS or home<br />
building for orphan-headed<br />
households, SURF strives to<br />
help survivors rebuild a sense<br />
<strong>of</strong> self and trust in humanity.<br />
In 1997 Mary formally establ<strong>is</strong>hed<br />
SURF to continue to aid, ass<strong>is</strong>t and<br />
support survivors in the UK and<br />
Rwanda too.<br />
SURF <strong>is</strong> working to ensure that<br />
Rwanda’s genocide:<br />
• Victims are never forgotten<br />
• Survivors are always heard and<br />
supported – in Rwanda and the UK<br />
SURF has achieved a great deal<br />
since its inception:<br />
- 17,500 survivors today receive<br />
medical treatment through health<br />
clinics establ<strong>is</strong>hed by SURF<br />
- 40,000 survivors are now selfsufficient<br />
through incomegenerating<br />
activities funded by<br />

SURF<br />
- 300,000 victims <strong>of</strong> the genocide<br />
have been buried in mass graves<br />
constructed by SURF<br />
In the past year alone, SURF has<br />
helped:<br />
- Opened a new health clinic and<br />
community centre in Ntarama to<br />
serve 3,000 survivors<br />
- D<strong>is</strong>tributed livestock to over<br />
15,000 survivors through a<br />
programme funded by Good Gifts<br />
- Provided educational support to<br />
over 5,000 orphaned survivors and<br />
dependents <strong>of</strong> survivors<br />
Through funding from the UK<br />
Department for International<br />
Development, SURF supports<br />
2,500 women survivors raped<br />
and infected with HIV during<br />
the genocide through a Care and<br />
Treatment Project.<br />
