ANALYSIS OF THE CORN-TORTILLA VALUE CHAIN: CURRENT SITUATION AND COMPETITION FACTORS<br />
According to <strong>the</strong> United States Department <strong>of</strong> Agriculture (USDA) in <strong>the</strong> 2010/2011 period,<br />
world <strong>corn</strong> production reached 829 million tons, with ten countries producing 85.3% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
total: <strong>the</strong> United States, China, <strong>the</strong> European Union, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, India, Ukraine,<br />
South Africa and Canada.<br />

Global consumption <strong>of</strong> <strong>corn</strong>, meanwhile, amounted to 844.4 million tons in <strong>the</strong> 2010/2011<br />
period and was concentrated in seven countries, <strong>the</strong> United States, China, <strong>the</strong> European Union,<br />
Brazil, Mexico, India, Japan and Canada. These countries consume 76.7% <strong>of</strong> world production.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> 2007/08 to 2009/10 cycles, final stock levels were relatively high. However, a significant<br />
decrease in stock levels <strong>of</strong> <strong>corn</strong> in <strong>the</strong> world was seen in <strong>the</strong> 2010/2011 cycle and ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />
decline is expected for <strong>the</strong> 2011/12 cycle.<br />
