all," for he has passed beyond <strong>the</strong> limi-<br />

tations <strong>of</strong> matter.<br />

When <strong>the</strong> causes that brought <strong>the</strong><br />

Ego into Devachan are exhausted, <strong>the</strong><br />

experiences assimilated, Man begins to<br />

feel once more <strong>the</strong> thirst for sentient<br />

life which can be assuaged on <strong>the</strong> ter-<br />

restrial plane only. The Ego <strong>the</strong>n re-<br />

turns to earth in a gradual descent,<br />

meeting on his way downwards <strong>the</strong><br />

seeds <strong>of</strong> evil sown in his preceding life.<br />

These seeds have remained in a state<br />

<strong>of</strong> suspended animation during his stay<br />

in Devachan; <strong>the</strong>y awaken to life as<br />

<strong>the</strong> new personality is slowly fashioned<br />

for <strong>the</strong> incarnation that is to begin; <strong>the</strong><br />

burden <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> past is taken by <strong>the</strong> Ego,<br />

to be lightened or made still heavier,<br />

as <strong>the</strong> case may be. These seeds are<br />

what <strong>the</strong> Buddhists call Sk<strong>and</strong>has <strong>and</strong><br />

are sensations, abstract ideas, tenden-<br />

cies, material qualities, <strong>the</strong> aroma <strong>of</strong><br />

which has been assimilated by <strong>the</strong> Ego<br />

while on his way to Devachan. They<br />

are woven into <strong>the</strong> new 'man <strong>of</strong> flesh'<br />

into which <strong>the</strong> Immortal Pilgrim is<br />

soon imprisoned again. Such is <strong>the</strong><br />

Wheel <strong>of</strong> Life, <strong>the</strong> Cycle <strong>of</strong> Necessity,<br />

"which none at last can turn aside or<br />

stay."<br />

Death is <strong>the</strong> 'great adventure.' It<br />

is <strong>the</strong> portal through which passes <strong>the</strong><br />

Immortal Pilgrim on its way to free-<br />

dom, light, peace. It is <strong>the</strong> birth <strong>of</strong><br />

Man into spheres <strong>of</strong> unspeakable glory,<br />

into realms <strong>of</strong> Universal Life. What<br />

but dead-letter dogmas, could ever have<br />

disguised death so as to make it appear<br />

as a Black Phantom to be dreaded by<br />

man? Xature is a compassionate<br />

Mo<strong>the</strong>r, a Friend to be respected <strong>and</strong><br />

loved. She provides for us all <strong>the</strong> rest<br />

we need between our days, <strong>the</strong> peace<br />

we yearn for between our lives. There<br />

is a continuity <strong>of</strong> life everywhere in Na-<br />

ture; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> glorious transition which<br />

comes to us all at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> earthly<br />

existence is but <strong>the</strong> starting-point <strong>of</strong><br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> fuller state <strong>of</strong> being, an<br />

opening <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> secret flower <strong>of</strong> our Soul,<br />

though for <strong>the</strong> present we miscall this<br />

by <strong>the</strong> inadequate name <strong>of</strong> 'death.'<br />
