James’ multi-media art practice is inspired by<br />
her South Asian heritage, immigrant history and<br />
love of books. She explores the construction of<br />
identity and belonging through critique of<br />
authoritative systems, the archive, and<br />
personal/collective memory.<br />
James has exhibited in professional museums<br />
and galleries in Canada, USA, England, India and<br />
Pakistan. Recently, her video projection,<br />
Borderline, was shown in collaboration with The<br />
Kingston Canadian Film Festival and Modern<br />
Fuel (2012). Another video, Bright Oriental Star,<br />
toured the Royal Ontario Museum, The Bhaven<br />
(UK), and the Thunder Bay Art Gallery (2010). I<br />
know you, Louise Boothe was a featured<br />
installation in C<strong>ON</strong>TACT (2004) and Tagore and<br />
Mrs. E., an intervention at the Art Gallery of<br />
Ontario (2000), was featured in Museums After<br />
Modernism edited by Pollock and Zemans<br />
(2007).<br />
James has received numerous grants including a<br />
Chalmers Professional Development Grant. She<br />
participated in many residencies, at the Banff<br />
Centre (2002) and a touring exhibition by<br />
invitation of the Canadian High Commission in<br />
Pakistan (2003).<br />
